Magic

Magic within the worlds of the Firmament is an ever-present natural force, generally invisible to the naked eye except in especially strong concentrations. It flows similarly to wind or ocean currents, though it's generally unimpeded by most forms of matter. Most casters draw the magic used in casting spells from the magic present in the air or within their bodies. Casters who draw their power from another being or space generally guide that magic via various means into the space near or within them in order to cast their spells.   An anti-magic field generally disperses natural and otherwise gathered magic for the duration of its existence. Most creatures for whom magic is more actively used by their biology have natural defense mechanisms against dispersal in a similar manner that at least keep them alive.

The Culture of Magic

Sheora

The magic of The Kingdom of Sheora is extremely formalized, though some regional variation exists. Incantations are performed in Sheoran Celestial, a dialect of Celestial (understandable to anyone with knowledge of Celestial) based on millenia-old textual records of communication with the gods. Even casters outside of the structure of the church, the military, or service to the crown generally learn this style of casting or at least learn to imitate it to avoid too many questions.   Within structured education or the church, there are very formal definitions to the gestures that make up the somatic components of spells, and material components are often framed as offerings, though the latter is more common in the church. The research of new spells is frowned upon except for military purposes, especially if their components fall outside of traditional structure, but it's not explicitly illegal; instead, prodigies who demonstrate substantial inventiveness with magic will generally be pushed to join the military, sometimes via impled or explicit threat.

Eskijan and Estil

Eskijan and Estil only separated from one another about forty years back. As a result, most of their customs surrounding magic are similar, with only slight divergence in the past few decades. Estilian magic tends to be performed in the native language of the caster - primarily Common - using especially formal/antiquated and flowery language spoken in a declarative manner. Contrary to magic performed elsewhere, a reasonably educated Common-speaking individual with no knowledge of magic could possibly, with time and effort, divine the general nature of a spell cast in Estilian style. Composing an incantation for a spell in Estil or Eskijan is generally considered of similar artistic merit to composing a poem, and advanced casters will often add their own distinct touches to their incantations. Somatic components are similar to those of Sheora, though there are dialect-like differences in gestures as well as the conceptual theory behind them.

Ashana

Sanctuary Ashana's magical tradition remains mostly unbroken, dating from the time in which its founders made their journey from the Woodlands into this plane. Due to their desire to isolate themselves from the wars and quibbles of the shorter-lived members of this plane, the elves of Ashana settled in the frigid north, in a normally-uninhabitable region. As a result, magic is tightly integrated with everyday life. Even those without magical skill benefit from both minor and major magical improvements to their quality of life.   The most notable and immediately obvious use of magic in Ashana can be found in the magic used to keep Ashana cities warm and safe throughout even the coldest times of the year. The majority of Ashana is covered in ice and snow year-round, with very few plants and with limited fauna that tend to dwell in caves and only venture out to hunt or forage for food. As a result, the Ashana live in cities entirely encased by reinforced glass, the glass shaped into domes that contain each dwelling or gathering place. These domes are magically heated, with water from the snow around melted and purified automatically to provide a fascimile of running water to all dwellings. Ashana cities are often completely covered in snow and impossible to see from above, but there are markings designating entry points to those who know what to look for.   Ashana magic generally involves the drawing of runes as well as singing or chanting. The runes used are chosen based on their original Sylvan meaning, as Elvish is derived from Sylvan. Runes are drawn, either in the air or on the ground. While this is traditional and generally learned by all magically-capable residents of Ashana (and, in theory, by those who are less capable), the residents of Ashana harbor no prejudice against more unique forms of magic so long as they are not derived from a dangerous source.

Algan Settlements

Magic within the Algan Settlements is a mishmash of the styles found in other regions as well as unique discoveries, combined with an emphasis on practicality and occasionally mild superstition. Many trained in more formal arts would call Algan magic crude or uncivilized, but Algan magic doesn't mind what they think and works just as well anyways.

Thassas

Thassian magic takes simplicity and makes it into elegance, wasting as little energy as possible on grandiose gesture. It's often labeled as deceptive by those who dislike it and efficient by those who prefer it. Though derived from Sheoran magic, the magic of Thassas has simplified the array of gestures down to simple and sharp motions, and condensed elaborate incantations down to short phrases and abbreviations.

Blum

Blum does not have a strong magical culture, but what little there is has been shaped by the dwarvish desire for craftsmanship and the mutual valuation of hearth and home. Those with magical gifts within Blum generally will craft their own implements, shape their own components, and utter nigh-incomprehensible incantations that relate to cultural and personal memories, including in-jokes.

The Tribes of Lasnil

The magic of the gnomish tribes of Lasnil is directly descended from freeform, chaotic fey magic, and shares most of its qualities. It's either frightening or beautiful to someone unused to it, depending on their particular values. Expect lots of sparks.
