The Broken Jaw
The Broken Jaw is a pirate haven located in The Great RibbonJagged Beltstripesofficial bureaucracy of the Fractured Skies' major powers.
The Broken Jaw has no official leadership, no governing organization, and no regulations on trade. There are but two rules of order, all ships must fly independent colours, and none may discriminate against any other. All are welcome in the Jaw, whether they like it or not. Though this dream of leaderless rule often conflicts with the political reality of the Jaw.
However, the Jaw doesn't only attract those of a criminal persuasion. Outcasts, misanthropes, and tortured artists often make their way to the Jaw to find a place free from the scrutiny of civil society. Talented artists and craftspeople can easily find work and opportunity in this city, often being sponsored or hired by fools quick to part with their Slivers.
Demographics
The Jaw is a unique blend of every culture, race, and people of the Skies. Anyone can come to the Jaw, and so, everyone does. Among the populace are even a few individuals of yet unclear origin that do not resemble any known people of the Skies.
Industry & Trade
Its unique position outside the jurisdiction of any power in the Skies makes the Jaw the perfect place to purchase black-market goods. No matter where you go, there's always someone happy to take your Slivers (sometimes by force). From forbidden artifacts of the surface, to illegal magical weapons, to strange and exotic creatures, the Jaw has a way of attracting items of interest like no where else in the Skies.
Additionally, the large number of mercenaries in the Jaw ensure that if something you're looking for is not here already, for the right price, someone can "fetch it" for you.
The Jaw also has a thriving service industry, catering to every sin and vice known to the Skies. Sex work, booze, drugs, and violent entertainment, whatever gets your goat, the Jaw provides (even if you want a goat).
One of the darker aspects of the Jaw is the slave trade. Although detested by most, as it does not technically clash with the two directives, a few merchants practice the cruelest of trades. Generally their stock is purchased from a few select Serpent Rider tribes, who raid smaller settlements for loot and slaves, although occasionally merchants from The Kingdom of Dovin come to market with Burrowfolk.
Infrastructure
The Jaw hangs off of the very Jagged Belt that surrounds it, suspended in mid air by hundreds of thousands of feet of rope, silk, chains, and magic. Most buildings are made of wood, generally scavenged from ruined ships, or in some cases, the buildings are simply repurposed ships that were no longer able to fly. Bridges connect each structure together, creating a vast and tangled network of pathways that coil outward from the settlement's core. More stable structures exist in the Jaw, tunneled into the rocks from which most of the structures hang (although these are rare, as the equipment and manpower needed to dig them out is costly).
The buildings which comprise the Jaw's infrastructure are inspired by dozens of different cultures and design philosophies, giving the city a distinctly diverse design. The Jaw is lit by thousands of metal lanterns all controlled by the same company, which literally dictates the distribution of light across the city.
Visiting ships are perched in cradle-like nets which hang on giant metal hooks embedded into the stones of The Great Ribbon. Others rest on top of those stones, but such parking space is in short supply, and is only available to rent for premium prices.
Guilds and Factions
Although there is no formal leadership of the Broken Jaw, alliances naturally form in a vacuum, and power tends to pool. In reality, control of the Jaw is broken in three ways to three captains. The three play a tumultuous game of cat and mouse, desperate to unseat the others without leaving vulnerabilities to be exploited by newer enemies. At the moment this has resulted in a tense stale-mate of sorts, although this particular stale-mate involves a lot of stabbing and what suspiciously looks like gang-warfare. Individual merchants are forced to pick a side to survive and pay exorbitant protection rates just to prevent the conflict from spilling into their shop.
The three captains are:
- Delilah "the Gaunt", the voidborn banshee of Valstrad.
- "The Giant" Swagrus Hargreed, the bastard of The Earth Titan.
- Sorza "the Snake of Highgarden", the shadow's assassin.
History
The Broken Jaw was created originally as a trading outpost for a single merchant, one Dexter Lavoy of Skyhome, in the year 367 F.A. Dexter grew tired of taxes on his goods and regulations limiting what he could and could not sell, so he left his home island to create a place where he could trade without The Parliament taking a cut. Unfortunately, his desire for "free trade" quickly got him involved with the seediest people the Skies had to offer, and Dexter quickly lost control of his dream, as his paradise was coopted by smugglers, pirates, and slavers.
In the century since its creation, the Jaw has become an example of the worst aspects of capitalistic exploitation. The "free market" was quickly taken over by gangsters and debt sharks. Companies quickly emerged to monopolize entire service industries, stifling the growth of new businesses and setting exorbitant prices. Despite all the Slivers that flow into the Jaw, most end up pooling into the hands of a select few.
"This place used to be a dream, you know? Oh sure, you can have fun here. Lots of fun. But it's just not the same. All the blood, the lust for money... This place has become a nightmare."
