Thetis
Princess Thetis (a.k.a. Neried)
In keeping with family tradition, the House of Atlan felt that Princess Thetis—the firstborn of King Theseus and Queen Marta—needed an understanding of the surface world and its people if she was to deal with them as Queen of Atlantis one day. So they made arrangements with Duncan Summer for Thetis to attend the new Claremont Academy as a student while also getting some training in the use of her powers. Thetis adopted the code name Nereid, from the mythic spirits of the sea.
Thetis found adapting to life on the surface world both exhilarating and frustrating at times. Raised as royalty in Atlantis, she was used to having things her way. It also took her some time to get used to the customs of surface-folk, although she enjoys much of the culture the surface world has to offer. In addition to her studies at the Academy, Nereid also worked with her grandmother’s namesake, Siren, on a number of occasions.
Nereid was a founding member of the first incarnation of the Next-Gen team at Claremont Academy, forging friendships with her classmates that she still maintains. She has known Bowman and Thunderbolt from the Freedom League since those school days, as well as Sonic and the sorceress Seven. Nereid later became acquainted with other Claremont students, including the current Raven when he was a student under the name Elite.
It was a romance with Elite’s friend and teammate Magni that taught Nereid her harsh lesson in duty and responsibility, as she and the young demigod from another world came to realize their heritage and responsibilities would not allow them to be together long-term. Their parting was one of the reasons Nereid returned to Atlantis and resumed her duties in the House of Atlan, including training under the guidance of her mother, Queen Marta.
Nereid is of noble blood and it shows in her manner and her actions. She is surprisingly humble and not overly spoiled, thanks to her education and experiences with The Next-Gen.
She understands a heavy duty comes with her role as princess of Atlantis, but sometimes wishes she could just be an ordinary young woman. She loved her life on the surface world because it allowed her to forget her duties and responsibilities, if only for a while, and is sometimes wistful about it. Thetis makes friends easily, and never hesitates to offer her opinion (even when no one asks her for it). She was trained to fight and defend herself from a very young age, with further rigorous training with the Atlantean Royal Guard, and she’s super-strong even for an Atlantean, so anyone who thinks she’s “just a girl” quickly learns otherwise.
