Marta
Queen Marta
Marta was born and raised in the city of Atlantis, and always proud of her heritage and aware of the responsibility it implied to the city and her people. So she decided early on to become one of Atlantis’ guardians, training as a soldier, and eventually swearing her service to King Thallor and Queen Evelynn as one of the Palace Guard to protect the royal family. In Marta’s case, this most often meant dealing with Prince Theseus, the stubborn, strong-headed heir to the throne, who spend so much of his time gallivanting and playing at hero with his surface-dwelling friends, rather than attending to his duties in Atlantis.
Although it was perhaps not her place to do so, Captain Marta frequently made her opinions known, even to the prince himself.
Naturally, she bristled at the notion of being assigned the role of Theseus’s bodyguard and needing to travel away from Atlantis to nurse-maid him on the surface.
The prince (or “Sea-King” as he was known to his surface friends) wasn’t overly fond of the idea himself, but who were they to disobey a royal command? Well, Theseus was all too willing to disobey, often driving Marta to distraction by evading her protection and company, such that the two of them nearly came to blows over it.
Mutual respect grew over some narrow scrapes and last-minute rescues on both their parts, and Theseus took pleasure in showing Marta some of the many aspects of his surface heritage he enjoyed. To her surprise, Captain Marta found she enjoyed them as well.
According to his teammates in the Freedom League, the only person to realize Sea-King was in love with his brave and beautiful bodyguard after Prince Theseus was Captain Marta herself. It took a near-disaster in Atlantis, and the sacrifice of King Thallor against the barbarian usurpers, to finally bring the two of them together. When he ascended the throne, Theseus courted Marta in earnest, winning her hand in marriage, and crowning her Queen of Atlantis.
The Atlantean's widely respect their Queen for her patriotism, military prowess, and her unwavering devotion to her family and her people. Marta does not share the fair-haired looks her husband and daughter inherited from the Queen Mother, having instead the classical Atlantean features of black hair, pale and slightly olive-tinged skin, and vividly sea-green eyes. Although many years out of service as a Guardian, she still carries a telescoping Orichalcum staff, able to collapse down to a small baton, or extend to over six feet long. While it is primarily ceremonial, Queen Marta remains an expert in wielding it.
