Kelaqgux (Keh-LACK-gucks)

Kelaqgux (or simply 'gux') is the term for both the raw solitary mineral mined at the Eizunuth Veil of the Creqira and the compound created when it is combined with other minerals to create the stabilizer crucial to the production of Enstreng. This compound additionally gives enstreng's chemical reaction a characteristic fuchsia flame.   The solitary mineral is also used in yeccasphate, the smelling-salt used by Shepherds of Leaving, and gives it both its pinkish color and its potent smell.   Due to its formation underwater -- and the thicker deposits being present at greater, calmer depths -- mining is by default precarious, and many "gux-divers" have perished in their pursuit.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Once mined and pre-combined: hard, small chips or flakes. It is then typically ground into hard grains for better storage and processing.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Although not fully understood, it acts as a stabilizer for many otherwise volatile chemical processes, such as the production of Enstreng.

Compounds

The compound of the same name, used in Enstreng.

Geology & Geography

Exclusively from the Eizunuth Veil of the Creqira, mostly in the north of Iyr. The raw mineral forms as a buildup on submerged rocks -- similar to speleothems in caves -- and gradually hardens; particularly old and thick deposits take on a durable scale-like appearance. Thicker deposits occur in deeper, more settled waters, while the agitation of waterfalls and currents limits their occurrence closer to the surface.

History & Usage

History

Considering that the Creqira is regarded as the penultimate freshwater source for the entirety of Icalar, the Eizunuth Veil and Well that are created from it have long been regarded with mild to zealous levels of reverence, largely through the influence of Sehndism. Taking anything from the site was already regarded as distasteful, but this was amplified by Enstreng's eventual fall from grace. Increasing scarcity of the mineral has been bittersweet.

Cultural Significance and Usage

As part of the yeccasphate smelling-salt used by Shepherds of Leaving.

Industrial Use

As a stabilizer in Enstreng.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Though not outright prohibited, trade is extremely frowned upon.

Law & Regulation

Enstreng being outlawed and no other purpose known, any sale or trade of kelaqgux is treated with extreme scrutiny by most, especially outside of the House of Leavings and non-yeccasphate use.
