Mikahnzoch (Mih-KANN-zok)
A mikahnzoch is a somewhat sentient, quasi-organic, quasi-mineral structure of Azgorach that forms a crucial function all Azgorach reproduction, acting as both natural selection and incubator. It also is deeply integrated in the Keen, though how is not fully understood.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The structure itself consistents of a coral-like mass surrounding several smooth crucibles on the ground -- an outgrowth of its subterranean root system -- that then create placentas; these placentas are then enclosed by additional protective coral growth.
Genetics and Reproduction
Their own reproductive process is unclear to the point of being assumed nonexistent; considering they are the only way all sentient subspecies reproduce, their steady loss drives the need to find new territory -- though how the mikahnzoch would then be relocated, or sown, is especially unclear.
Behaviour
The mikahnzoch is known to convey the Keen in that it signals specific individuals to reproduce or contribute additional genetic material; whether the offspring acquires their perception of the Keen from the mikahnzoch is uncertain. Equally, it is uncertain but possible that the mikahnzoch is the source of the Keen itself, by that token.
