'Loraanys' Grace'

The 'Loraanys' Grace' is an enormous Zakharan dhow approximately 150 ft (45m) long, and weighing around 275 tonnes.   The ship sports a finely carved wooden plaque beneath the windows of the sterncastle, wherein the ship's name is inscribed in flowing script. The ship is long and narrow, with a shallow draft when compared to other vessels of central Faerûnian design. One of the defining features of the ship is its figurehead, which resembles a mixture between a lion, a dragon, a woman, and some manner of bird which presumably gave the ship its original namesake 'The Manticore'.   By 1496 DR the ship had fallen into the hands of a group of thieves in service to 'The Cutters' thieves' guild, who had stolen onto the ship in order to escape the pursuit of Waterdhavian authorities. Following their boarding the group bested the ship's crew and released the slaves on board, many of whom now serve as the vessel's de facto crew.
Above: A typical Zakharan dhow.   The 'Loraanys' Grace' is what is known as a Baghla class dhow; Baghla class dhows typically sport a curved prow with a stem-head, an ornately carved stern and quarter galleries. Their average length is 100 ft (30 m) with an average weight of 200 tonnes, however, larger ships of this class are not uncommon. Usually they had two masts using two to three triangular lateen sails; supplementary sails like a jib were often added on the bowsprit, as well as on a topmast atop the main mast. As large and heavy ships as baghlas require a crew of at least 30 sailors, some requiring even up to 40.
