The King's Council

Structure

The King’s Ministers   The core of the government (frequently referred to as ‘the Government’) is the High King and his individual ministers. They are as follows:   His Majesty, the High King – Edward VII/Martin V   The Head of the Government – the king holds a veto on all legislation and proposals (though in practice, due to past history, it is very rarely used). As the Government is formed of an uneven number, the king deliberately has the deciding votes in all cases where the matter is evenly split.   The king’s role is akin to long-term planning and big change. He also appoints his ministers of state with the advice of the LC.   The Lord Chancellor – The Rt Honourable Duke Jeremy Brighttooth   The Lord Chancellor is the equivalent of the Prime Minister. He runs the daily business of government, sits in the Convocation and argues with the masses and, with the other Ministers, proposes the mechanics of how to implement the king’s long-term plans. The LC is often the head of the party with the most seats in Convocation.   The Lord Treasurer – The Rt Hon. Samuel Drakes   The Treasurer controls the economy of the Great Realm. They are drawn from Convocation like the LC, but as merchants are allowed to sit in Convocation (if they can cough up the “sitting cash” (the money required to stand for election)) the Treasurer is often appointed from their ranks, as they often have the best financial instincts.   The Lord Marshal, and Minister for the Great Swamp – Sir Robert Magab   The Lord Marshal is the head of the king’s army. It is the highest position knights often aspire to, and the principal adviser to the king in times of war. Besides also monitoring security threats in more quiet times, the Lord Marshal also deals with a vast array of martial events (such as tournaments etc). His office deals with the permissions required to hold such events or to have officially sanctioned duels held to decide grievances.   The Lord Marshal is also the Minister for the Great Swamp (as it “falls under the king’s control”) but it is an empty portfolio and just tradition now.   The Lord Prime Justice – The Hon. Lord Nigel Wellingworth   The Head of the Justice System. He sits in the highest court, the Royal Court of Justice, which binds all the lower courts. In his role as a minister, contributes towards the direction the law should take in these modern times.   The Ministers for Raman, Ardhi and Akanowa (and the Holy Emissary to the Chapel).   These are individuals appointed by the king to act as his ears on the ground in the other realms. They are akin to ambassadors and are often comprised of animals of great dignity and public service. A knighthood or lordship often accompanies the appointment in the minister’s respective land.   They advise the actual ruler of each area – the ruler has the final say, but naturally they often have great influence due to their role on behalf of the king, awarded title and length of experience. Importantly, each minister must be drawn from their actual homeland if they are to be the minister of that area (ie, only an animal from Raman must be the Minister for Raman, and so forth). The Holy Emissary is always a bishop appointed by the Archbishop and sent to the king’s court on his behalf.
