The Dagphi

When the upper realm was open to all, creatures and beings of all sorts wandered it: demons, angels, fairies, nymphs or humans, just to name a few. And though some mortal and others not, some magical and others not, these differences did not stop the mixing of people.   When the realm was closed, it was decided to withdraw magic from the upper realm (for it is highly susceptible to magic and unpredictable) but nearly everyone could trace themselves back to a magical parentage somewhere. The lower realms were too crowded to receive all those who had migrated above and the upper realm too paradisal to be left uninhabited. A choice was given: those who wished to stay above could do so, with the provision that their magic would be sealed off along with the world. Primarily beings highly removed from their magical ancestry chose to stay, already having little use and ability for magic anyway.   But at  The Great Upper Battle, when the opening was sealed, many of those very people of low magical abilities had been enchanted into Godaris’ army. Thousands died, and although the realm was sealed with many of the most powerful sorcerers below, there hadn’t been time to separate those who wished to stay from those who wished to return. Millions were stranded, and not all of the lowest magical caste.   Magic, while neither inherently good or evil, can be used to suit the sorcerer’s agenda, and parties of both remained above. But magic had not been entirely sealed below. It still seeped through cracks in the realm central to Wandering Wilds. Magic was never truly abandoned, but many believed that a life away from magic in this land was for the best. Magic became largely taboo, though occasionally used, and only those of the most ambitious or desperate natures chose to practice it.   As the secluded years went on, and magic in this realm studied and better understood (for it was no doubt that their land had magic in it and much could be gained by learning about it, but it did not mean it was practiced), it became clear that there was a difference in people who had been conceived by magical intervention (ranging from evil acts of possession to helpful acts of medicines) were different than others. They were called “Dagphi.”   The Dagphi, although they may appear normal at birth, have an unusual keenness for the magical arts, but having been born of the unpredictable substance are susceptible to unusual ailments as well. In a world where magic is extremely powerful and influential but societally off-limits, many Dagphi have been cast away for their traits. They are seen as harbingers of chaotic energy or cruel sorcerers themselves (even though few are, they are just not taught how to control their magic).   It is usually known to the parents when a Dagphi is born (though not always), but most keep this information quiet for fear of being cast out themselves for the use of magic. It is only when the Dagphi nature of a child rears its head (for magic is not a subtle force and wishes always to be seen) that a being’s true nature is seen. This can happen at any age, or never at all. (Indeed, some Dagphi do not realize their own magical influences at all.) In some cases, a fit of strong emotion may express itself as a magical disaster (towns have been destroyed because a child did not receive a toy they wanted) or they may be inflicted with magical ailments from the land itself (boils containing acid, muteness of certain sounds, disappearance of the nose are among the most common). Most Dagphi chose a nomadic life to avoid the scorn of society.
