Phandalin

Phandalin was a village in the Sword Coast North that enjoyed much prosperity in the 10th century DR. It was raided by orcs in 951 DR and subsequently abandoned. It was eventually resettled in the late 15th century as a frontier settlement of farmers and prospectors.

In the late 15th century DR, Phandalin was a modest and architecturally boring town of farmers, woodcutters, trappers, and miners built atop the ruins of the old Phandalin. The town quickly grew to about fifty well-maintained structures built of logs and flagstones with three deep wells providing water. The town was dominated by an apple orchard on the west side and a ruined manor atop a hill to the east. The townsfolk would congregate in a small town square and an adjacent town green.

Demographics

Circa the 10th century, Phandalin boasted a large community of humans, gnomes and dwarves that prospered thanks to the wonders brought about by the Forge of Spells and Phandelver's Pact.

Government

The townsfolk once elected a "townsmaster" who served as a judge and mediator as well as kept town records.   After the Attack of the Dragon Queen, it had no real functioning government, and the Phandalin Miner's Exchange began acting as a center of records-keeping for town activities and local mining claims.

Industry & Trade

Phandalin was adjacent to land which was good for farming and ranching, and was near enough to Neverwinter Wood to support a woodcutting and logging industry. Most of the wealth, however, was from mining in the nearby Sword Mountains for gold, platinum, and cold iron.

Guilds and Factions

  • Lords' Alliance

The Lords' Alliance, also known as the Council of Lords, was a partnership of merchant cities founded in 1325 DR. Its members were from the West Faerûn, The North and Western Heartlands, including Waterdeep, Silverymoon, Baldur's Gate, and Neverwinter, as well as other free cities and towns in the region, which made up the bulk of the organization.

  • Lionshield Coster

The Lionshield Coster, also called the Lionshields, was a merchant company based in the fortified city of Yartar, that operated throughout the greater Dessarin Valley during the 15th century DR.

  • Redbrand Ruffians

The Redbrands were a group of bandits and brigands active in the resettled frontier town of Phandalin and nearby Triboar Trail region in the late 15th century DR.

  • Rockseeker Mining Company

The Rockseeker Mining Company was founded by the Rockseeker Brothers, a trio of dwarven adventurers seeking the lost Phandelver Mine in the 15th century DR.

Other factions active around Phandalin include:

  • Harpers
  • Order of the Gauntlet
  • Emerald Enclave

Points of interest

Phandalin was a small town, containing only the basic infrastructure neccesary for a few hundred residents, plus its small mining and lumber industries.

  • Stonehill Inn& Provisions

A modest inn and general store that was run by a human named Toblen Stonehill. Toblen came from the east of Triboar, seeking opportunity in prospecting like many others. They soon found that they knew more about running an inn than mining, and so he established the inn.

  • Phandalin Miner's Exchange

A trading post operated by Halia Thornton where miners had their finds weighed and paid out. The towns's records were kept here.

  • Lionshield Trading Post

A weapons and armor supplier owned by the Lionshield Coster. The master of this post was a sharp-tongued woman named Linene Graywind.

  • Shrine of Luck

A small shrine made of stone from the ruins and Phandalin's only temple. It was in the care of a zealous young elf, Sister Garaele

  • The Sleeping Giant

A rundown, dirty, and dangerous watering hole operated by a dwarf named Grista. It was known for being frequented by a bandit group, the Redbrand Ruffians.

  • Phandalin Townmaster's Hall

A small building that served as the town's council building. It also housed a small, but serviceable jail in the cellar. It was run by the townsmaster, Harbin Wester.

  • Tresendar Manor

More of a castle than a manor, it was an ancient building that was abandoned after the Attack of the Dragon Queen. The cellars once served as a safe haven when the estate was attacked.

Geography

Phandalin was located in the northern foothills of the Sword Mountains south of Neverwinter Wood. It was northeast of Leilon where the road that ran from the High Road to Triboar faded into a trail. This was a region rich with both natural resources and adventuring opportunities.
