Ship types

This article covered rules for different types of ships, with brief outlines about who uses them, what they are used for, and what they are capable of.   Ships have a number of attributes:
  • Size in feet
  • Tonnage is how much cargo the ship can carry, in tons (1 ton is 2000lbs)
  • Speed is how fast the ship can move in mph
  • Role slots denotes how much room there is on the ship for individuals with a Ship Role .
  • Cannon decks denotes how many dedicated decks there are for cannons
  • Crew is how many people, including those with ship roles, who can live and travel on the ship - full crew means the ship can operate to its full capacity, and the ship must have at least half this number of crew to function.
  • Combat stats are the important statistics of the ship for combat
Cannons also have their own set of rules:
  • Each cannon reduces tonnage by 2, which includes the necessary ammunition and gunpowder
  • Main cannons must be spaced 20ft apart, on either side of each deck (i.e. a 40' sloop could have 2 cannons on each side for a total of 4 cannons - though that might be quite cramped for the helm!)
  • Main cannon (range 500/100) 8d10 bludgeoning damage. These cannons take one round to load and one round to fire. They can also use variant cannonballs. They fire in straight lines from the side of the ship.
  • Swivel cannon (range 250/100) 4d10 bludgeoning damage. These cannons are usually mounted near the front of the ship, and can be pivoted to aim. They take one round to load, and one round to aim and fire.
  • Variant cannonballs: Chain shot does half damage, but has a 50% chance to destroy one of the enemy's masts, reducing their speed. Grape shot does no damage to ships, but deals 8d10 damage to crew in a 10ft cube on the main deck.
