Carnyx of Morgan

Ancient Relic

The Carnyx of Morgan is the name given to an ancient, magical relic hidden within the Ouma cave in the gardens of Amotorr. Amortorr is one of The Sanctuary's ancient fortresses on the borders of Farside.

Amotorr's manicured and exquisite gardens hide a secret: an ancient cave that has been a place of worship for millennia, first for the Alviars  (or Ancestors) and then for the Alven clansmen.

Within the Ouma cave, guarded by a preternatural black mastiff called Magian, the Carnyx rests on a black pedestal of rare Frencal Marbil.

Description

The carnyx, a war horn,  is forged in bronze, and its headpiece could represent an enraged boar or bear.  Carnyx are only used for ceremonial purposes these days, but there are three such instruments in The Great Hoard of Alven. However, none are enchanted.

Because of the runes running along the long brass tube of the instrument, it is thought that the Carnys of Morgan has hidden magical properties that a Rune Wielder could maybe unlock.

The Sanctuary Seers have opposed trying out such a hypothesis for fear of what the Carnyx would call. Very few Seers know of the cave's existence and the Sanctuary would like to keep it like that.

Purpose

The real purpose of the Carnyx has been lost to time. Sanctuary scholars have often wished that Magian, the Hell's Cur could speak and tell of the magical artefact's history. However, there exists a myth surrounding the object.

The myth was written down many centuries ago by a Sanctuary seer in the Tale of Ouma document. In the stories, the carnyx was given by the goddess Morgan to chieftains of the now lost Clan Caldbeare (see also The Eye of Ciaran.

It is thought that Clan Caldbeare's men built the early version of Amotorr and ruled the valley of Amorvale and its surrounding lands. The eagle-nest keep of Amotorr might have been built to protect the cave.

In the legend, the Carnyx, if sounded, will call the goddess Morgan herself to the mortal plane - with terrible consequences. As Queen of the Underworld, Morgan's boons should not be sought idly. It is one of the goddess' boons that is meant to have caused Clan Caldbeare's demise.
