Ironclad Crafting

Ironclads have been an increasingly steady fixture of life in The Eternal Empire. Once regulated almost entirely to the homeland of their Kinderstärke creators, the use of Ironclads has been experiencing an explosion of growth with the rise of Human lead industry and design. While The Kinderstärke are still the unquestioned masters of Ironclad Manufacturing, recent new models designed and manufactured by Humans have been able to match the Intelligence and Technology of Kinderstärke design with their own tenacity and ruggedness.
The Ironclad have a deep culture reverence to The Kinderstärke, and The Alvain have held the machines with a distrustful respect since the first Alvain were slain by the constructs in the early conflicts between the two races. As such, the creation, modification, and usage of Ironclads was kept in careful oversight even before The Inheritance War, and Humanity's surprising ability to mobilize their own designs for warfare with the racial betters has only increased the regulations and restrictions placed on the construction and utilization of an Ironclad, especially in The Eastern Kingdoms.   The manufacturing of an Ironclad is no trivial task however, and eclipses all but the most complex constructs and weaponry in it's risk and complexity. To create a functional Ironclad, a technician needs a blueprint to begin the process, and then must invest a substantial quantity of time and silver into crafting the metallic chassis of the Ironclad. But an Ironclad is no mere suit of armour. Once the chassis is complete, the Ironclad is merely a lifeless shell until it is imbued with an Arcane Core to power its rudimentary intelligence. This is where the real work begins - with an operator beginning the long and delicate process of shaping the Ironclad's mind.   This entire process takes dozens, if not hundreds of hours to complete - and the creation of a full sized Ironclad by a single person is a daunting, if not impossible task for all but the most dedicated and practiced engineers. Both the Chassis and the Arcane Core are required for the successful completion of an Ironclad Project, and as such expertise in both the Mechanics and Operating are required to complete the project.   If a player wishes to construct an Ironclad, either with the proper permit or by getting their hands on a blueprint through less reputable methods, the crafter must complete multiple steps, as outlined below:   Step 1 - Secure A Schematic for Chassis Step 2 - Acquire Materials Step 3 - Construct Chassis Step 4 - Secure A Blueprint for Arcane Core Step 5 - Enchant Ironclad's Arcane Core   Once completed, the Ironclad will come to life, and posses the statistics and behaviors that were determined by the blueprints and dice results spend during the process.

Step 1 - Secure A Blueprint for Chassis

An Ironclad project begins with the chassis. While the Arcane Core powers the construct's thoughts and personality, it's chassis is normally the primary factor in what the Ironclad is capable of doing or not. An Intelligence designed for warfare would do little good in the chassis of a Messenger Drone, much the same that an intelligence designed to Unload shipping vessels would do little good in chassis designed for long range gunnery bombardments. This is why it's usually best practice to begin with the chassis blueprint that best fits the purpose behind your new creation.   It's important to keep in mind that the blueprints for designing an Ironclad are highly valuable are carefully regulated. One cannot simply purchase a blueprint on the open market in most situations (at least not without the correct permits) However a skill mechanic may be able to reverse engineer the design of an existing Ironclad - provided the construct doesn't prevent you from dismantling it.   Once you've selected an available blueprint you may continue to step 2.   A list of the most common Ironclad chassis designs are found here : https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-eternal-empire-of-alwaus-alvain/c/ironclad-design---chassis-category

Step 2 - Acquire Materials

Depending on the Chassis type selected, you will need to gather the resources required to build the Ironclad's outer shell and inner workings. The exact nature of the materials required is dependent on the template, and the complexity of the resources is determined by the GM and how deep into the crafting system your particular game is.   In addition, you will likely need to secure some tools and a workplace to store the Ironclad and the various resources while you perform the construction.

Step 3 - Construct Chassis

After acquiring the materials to make the Ironclad, construction on the chassis can finally begin. The player must make a Mechanics check relative to the difficulty described under the specific Chassis template. If the check is successful, the construction process is successful, and once the allocated number of hours has been spent on the project the chassis is complete. If the check is unsuccessful however, the project is a failure and the materials used to construct the chassis are typically lost.   The table below shows how dice results can be spent when constructing an Ironclad Chassis. First, the technician can use their a and t to improve the end result of the Ironclad's physical design. Then, the GM can spend h and d to modify the end result in a similar fashion. The below chart gives some suggestion on how dice results can be spent, however feel free to run your own ideas past the GM as well.

Step 4 - Secure A Design for an Arcane Intelligence.

Once the chassis is completed, the Operator can begin enchanting the Ironclad's Arcane Intelligence. The Arcane Intelligence is what gives life to the Ironclad, including the vast majority of it's skills and behaviors. This will determine how the Ironclad interacts with the world, and it's defined purpose in the world. To begin this process, you will select one of the available designs available to you for the enchantment process. Much like with the chassis, the designs used to shape an Ironclad's mind are heavily regulated and very valuable.   Getting your hands on one will not be a trivial task, but a list of the commmonly used templates is available here: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-eternal-empire-of-alwaus-alvain/c/ironclad-design---intelligence-category

Step 5 - Enchant The Ironclad's Arcane Core

The last and final step of the process is the most important. First, the Operator needs to obtain an Arcane Core. This is both the heart and mind or an Ironclad, and the enchantments placed on this valuable and complex construct are what separate one Ironclad from another. This process defines the personality, intelligence, and abilities of the Ironclad - and comes with significant risks. Creating a lifeform, even one as rudimentary as an Ironclad is a significant responsibility, and if one is not careful they may suddenly find themselves in possession of a metal construct the size of a troll with the mind and innocence of a human child.   The table below shows how dice results can be spent when developing the Arcane Intelligence. First, the Operator can use their a and t to improve the end result of the Ironclad's design. Then, the GM can spend h and d to modify the end result in a similar fashion. The below chart gives some suggestion on how dice results can be spent, however feel free to run your own ideas past the GM as well.

Depending on the dice results rolled, you may need to assign a the Ironclad a personality trait, either by choice or randomly. This can be discussed between the players and the GM, however the chart below shows some of the more commonly used traits.
