Kaldari (Ethnicity)
One of the largest cultural ethnic groups of humans in Alwaus, the Kaldari are a group of people that span the entire eastern-most coast of mianland Alwaus. Aside from cultural blending at the Cascadian-Kaldari border, most men and women east of Cascadia identify as "Kaldari".
The sons and daughters of early humans who travelled east to escape the influence of The Old Kingdom of Astoria, rebellion and unruliness have been a part of the kaldari identity since early humans begin retaining literary records. A culture that values strength, honor, and honesty about all else - they despise those who trick and swindel to get what they want, preferring instead to head situations off face to face. First fighting is common in kaldari nations, even among women, and it expected that a man who will not protect his word with his hands had better keep his word to himself. Such brawls are considered more expressions of honor and intent however, and little cultural significance is placed on who wins the bout - but rather the beating they are willing to take to defend their word. Such fights are common even among friends and family and rarely escalate beyond mere boxing matches.
While the The Kaldari Highlands saw significant territory loss after the death of The Traitor King, Marcius Lesnar and the loss of The Inheritance War, the creation of new kingdoms by order of Her Imperial Majesty has done little to shatter the cultural holds of humans on the eastern half of the continent. While many citizens of new kingdoms like The Annex and The Stormbreak Islands carry a strong sense of regional identity and pride in their home - they still consider themselves "ethnic kaldari" and carry on many of the customs, traditions, and values instilled in them by their forbearers. Despite the alvain's attempt to break the will of the kaldari people, their stubborness has proved resilient thus far.
Above all else however, the Kaldari are defined and perhaps unified with their distaste for "western influence" which not only refers to meddling from the older kingdoms of Astoria and Cascadia - but also the tireless meddling of Alvantes and Stolzetürm as well. It was from this frustration that the kaldari first through off the yolk of the old alvain treaties and declared themselves free of Alvain influence - banning the immortal race from the kingdom's borders entirely. While it seemed for a time after the failed rebellion that the kaldari spirit had at last been broken, it did not take long for the new generation of kaldari men and women to forget the lessons the alvain taught their forefathers on the battlefield.
Gender ideals in kaldari society are some of the most conservative in The Thirteen Kingdoms. A culture notably resistant to alvain cultural influences, the kaldari keep a distance from the "softening of masculinity" seen in Astoria and other cultures more influenced by Alvantes. Men are considered at their best when they are large, strong, loud, and usually hairy. Beards are never out of fashion, unkept or otherwise, and no self respecting kaldari man would ever be caught dead wearing cosmetics.
Kaldari woman are expected to balance both sides of gender norms - a difficult task even before factoring the kaldari's reputation for stubbornness. Women are seemingly expected to be delicate, beautiful, and feminine one minute only to be unbreakable she-devils of great will and strength another moment. It can be exhausting expectation to manage on the day to day, but most carry the weight of their people with the characteristic resilience of any true-born kaldari.
