First Heir
Requirements
Must be a drow female. Half-drow are sometimes accepted but will struggle integrating themselves into Apostan society enough to maintain their House.
Appointment
Upon the Matriarch's death, the current First Heir is promoted to Matriarch and the Second Heir becomes First Heir, the Third Heir becomes Second Heir and so on.
There is no ceremony required other than some legal paperwork. Often, a party is provided. Only the hosting House and other Houses of 'equal' standing are invited to attend.

Duties
It is often felt by First Heirs that it is their unspoken duty to force their Matriarch to vacate the rank if they could do a better job. Assassination is by far the most popular method, but blackmail and subtle mind-affecting poisons are also common choices.

Prestige, and usually a certain amount of influence over the House. Monetary benefits depend entirely upon how generous the current Matriarch is with the House's account.
