The Avernal Invasion
The huge sigil that appeared at the end of the war with the Giants in K'ul Goran remained a mystery for months. It's purpose was finally revealed at the end of Mirtul that year, when the symbol flared to life once more, the final seal was broken, and Archduke Zariel's centuries-long plot to establish a foothold on the Material Plane finally came to fruition.
A slowly-growing rift appeared in K'ul Goran, and devils immediately began to pour out of it. What followed was a rapid process of containment as K'ul Goran attempted to bring enough forces to bear to hem the devils in around the portal, rather than let them spread out around the country. From out of nowhere, a full scale invasion by Avernus had begun. All the work of The Vanguard had been to ensure this invasion's success, but the armies were still able to hold on initially.
Meanwhile, a plan to counterattack was formed, using the Dawnlander adventurers to destroy the portal completely and halt the invasion. The plan had three parts. First, the K'ul Goran army, bolstered by the Daring First and The Order of the Crimson Fist and a number of adventurers, would commit to a full assault on the devilish horde, pushing back all the way through the rift and into Avernus itself. Second, the strongest adventurers would make a play for Archduke Zariel, drawing her out into conflict as a distraction to keep one of the most cunning strategic minds in the multiverse from being able to fully focus on the battle at hand. Finally, a small group of adventurers would be sent far behind enemy lines to find the generator which was powering this portal from within Avernus - inside Zariel's tower.
The battle, which had now lasted for days as forces were brought to bear and the rift slowly expanded - initially only able to let individual imps through but by that point letting rows of forces through, was intense. The sabotage group was successful, able to find and disable the generator (powered by Genie children, of all things), while the distraction group were keeping Zariel occupied. Bel, the archduke Zariel ousted from control of Avernus, got involved with his own invasion, and a force of demons were also brought in to add a further front to the conflict. The Material armies had rushed in and taken up defensive positions further into the hellscape, and then as the portal collapsed had to quickly retreat back through it. The Order of the Crimson Fist, steadfast as ever, stayed behind to buy time for the retreat.
Within a matter of hours from the counterattack beginning, the invasion of the invaders had ended, the portal was closed and Zariel's ancient plot to secure Kantas as her personal Hell-on-Toril was thwarted.
