Amrinbridge Fortress
”An outpost of Bard’s Gate, guarding a bridge and collecting tolls.”
The Great Bridge is a huge, fortified structure that spans the Great Amrin River. On the north side is a keep with an outer bailey, well-patrolled by soldiers wearing the livery of the city of Bard’s Gate.
Amrinbridge Fortress is located on the north side of the Amrin River at the Great Bridge, and maintains the gatehouse on the south side of the bridge as well. It is an outpost of the Bard's Gate military, and also contains the customs-house that charges taxes on traffic heading across the bridge. The fortress itself is a simple keep, with an outer bailey. A few civilians work in the keep, but virtually all the population is either Bard's Gate soldiery or Bard's Gate customs officials. There is no inn at the fortress, although anyone with official business here is given a room in the fortress itself.
The Keep houses a small garrison of Waymark cavalry (50) and an attachment of well-mounted couriers (20). The keep’s garrison commander, Borniss Weljerand, is instructed to relay any important news or rumors by courier as quickly as possible to Bard's Gate. The officials of the customs-house are non-military; they collect taxes on traffic crossing the bridge in both directions, but northward travelers are charged an exorbitant toll, a punitive (and fairly lucrative) response to the high tariffs Aachen Province charges for travel along the Royal Vermis Road.
The high tolls charged for northward travel are a source of anger to the Aachenlander peasants living nearby, and they refer to Amrinbridge Fortress as “The Trollfort.” Stronghold
