High Priest of the Imperial Temple
Qualifications
A candidate for the position of High Priest must have been a Priest of the Imperial Temple for at least twenty years. He or she must also be capable of reading and writing without external aid.
Requirements
Humans are the only race permitted to be High Priest. Other than that, there are no requirements. Those selected for this position tend to be Priests trained in theology and history. A couple have been trained in religious law and history as well.
Appointment
The person selected for this role is chosen by a group of Gratican theologians and Priests and confirmed by the current Emperor/Empress of the Gratic Empire. There is a short ceremony that takes place on the nearest Day of Etheric in that week.
Duties
As the leader of the largest religious organization on Endaman, the High Priest mostly has moral duties:
represent and embody the scope and power of the Imperial Temple at events and on the Imperial Council;
uphold the immaculate morality of the priesthood by example; and
provide moral guidance to all of the priests and, by extension, the people of the Empire.
Responsibilities
A few responsibilities are attached to this role as well:
the delivery of sermons and services at the two temples in Gratic City, although one or both of these is commonly done by another priest of the High Priest's choice;
issuing of edicts against and bans on behaviour considered sinful; and
enforcing the standard that has been come to be expected of the Imperial Temple.
Benefits
A High Priest enjoys a great many benefits from attaining this high position. Politically, the High Priest can influence policy using their seat on the Imperial Council and their power over the workings of the Imperial Temple. Financially, a small portion of all temple donations in the Empire are given to him as a tithe (5% or thereabouts). As well, the High Priest can make use of a manor in Gratic City whenever he or she is there.
Accoutrements & Equipment
All High Priests have a special golden set of robes prepared and each is given a specially-bound copy of The Étak Writings for reference. This is in addition to their usually priestly robes and other related accoutrement.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The role of High Priest has a very high moral component, and any High Priest who disrespects their religion or uses it for worldly gain is commonly dismissed from the role.
History
The rank was brought under the metaphorical wing of The Gratic Empire in name in 65 I , but it had already been in existence in one way or another even earlier than that.
Cultural Significance
As most members of the Empire go to services at a temple five times a week, the High Priest has great power over the opinions of even the least devout. Due to their dislike of the Empire and in spite of belonging to the same religion, the edicts of the High Priest are disregarded in Oren.
