Orenian

"As the sun rose over the battlefield of the bridgeway, cheers went up from the troops of the Orenians. Soldiers of both Hayim and Oren hugged and celebrated together as friends. After twenty-odd years of subjugation by the Gratics, they were now a free people."   ~Ira Zagri, The War of Red Roses

Culture and cultural heritage

The Oren culture is originally an offshoot of the Gratic culture, although it contains many Hayim flavours and a culture all of its own. Orenians take great pride in their independence from The Gratic Empire and their war victories.

Shared customary codes and values

  • The Oren people value honesty and integrity in business and personal lives.
  • They also take great pride in military prowess and their nation, to extremes in some cases.
  • Common Etiquette rules

  • When two people meet for the first time, they kiss one another on the cheek once.
  • Current table manners do not permit the eating of meat with the hands, unlike in other places, as meat daggers and forks have become more common among the people.
  • Common Dress code

  • Lower class: plain shirts and short trousers of drab colours (browns and greys especially) for the men and slightly more colourful long dresses for the women.
  • Middle class: More colourful tunics and pants for merchants and robes and longer coats for outerwear. Women tend to dress like the lower classes, just with more jewelry or brighter colours.
  • Upper class: dresses get more elaborate for the women and the men wear vests and longer shirts tied with belts. Some people at this class also tend to wear Hayim fashions as well.
  • Common Customs, traditions and rituals

  • Orenians celebrate Orenian Independence Day every 15 Winter's End, usually with singing, music, and dancing competitions.
  • They also celebrate the anniversary of the treaty that ended the Red Rose War, calling it Treaty Day.
  • Birth & Baptismal Rites

Children are usually born at home, and are named the day of their birth. One week later, they are brought to the temple for the first time, where the local priest of the Four will confirm them as members of the community.

    Funerary and Memorial customs

Orenians do a traditional Four funeral.

    Common Taboos

  • The number seven is considered unlucky.
  • Several battlefields from the Red Rose War are considered cursed.
  • Historical figures

  • Rathus II , the last King of Oren before the Gratic Empire conquered the land.
  • Drusilla I, styled "the Restorer", who brought back the Kingdom of Oren and married King Khinkan IV of the Kingdom of Hayim, uniting the two kingdoms.
