The College of Mages
"This building I have no real experience of, as my wanderings and research did not lead me into that place. I can, however, describe how it appears from the outside; the shape of the structure is a pyramid of large size. Built of a reddish-brown rock and containing only one singular wooden door on the outside, it appears strange and mysterious. One of the people who has been inside told me that entering is not for the faint of heart, for wondrous things and dangerous ones exist there in equal measure." ~ The City of Cities
Purpose / Function
This building houses the magical heart of The Gratic Empire, The College of Mages. Here, students of magic learn the various spells and techniques required to practice their craft, and older masters continue to study the history and nature of magical energy and its effects. In the upper levels of the pyramid, the Dean of the college and his Professors conduct their experiments and rest between classes.
Alterations
The building was originally made out of wood when the College was founded in the early days of the Empire, but it was deemed too dangerous to have such a very flammable structure and it was rebuilt with a similarly reddish-brown stone.
Architecture
The building has a pyramidal shape, with each individual level representing the ascension of the learner towards enlightenment. The lowest layer of the structure are the only one open to non-members, and there are meeting areas for students and enthusiasts to mingle and share knowledge, as well as some essential records rooms. The next highest level is full of classrooms and dormitories for the students who learn here. Above that are the laboratories of both students and faculty, and the layers above that are rooms for the Professors and the Dean at the very pinnacle of the pyramid.
