United Nation Federation
The United Nation Federation (UNF) is a multinational government established as a central governing body for mankind's colonization of outer space. Reformed out of the United Nations in 2010, most of the nations that were involved in the UN have authority over any established UNF extraterrestrial region, but maintain independence in internal affairs on Earth. The primary occupying human government throughout the galaxy is the UNF.
History
The United Nation Federation was the successor to the United Nations, which was essentially reorganized and dissolved into the Federation. Such a large reorganization came about in response to the Soviet Union's newly-launched efforts to colonize the Moon; that is, to establish true cities for civilian life on the natural satellite. The United Nations were looking to establish a unitary government and shared set of laws that would oversee all future colonies on space, in keeping with Article II of the Outer Space Treaty. The Soviet Union took offense to this, as they saw the Moon (especially the location they first reached in 1969) as an extension of their nation. Harsh disagreements continued into the fall of 2010, until the Soviet Union decided to leave the United Nations, taking with it several of its close allies. This included all members of the Warsaw Pact (Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania) as well as members of the Eastern Bloc (including Vietnam, Cuba, North Korea, and others). China, a rising power in its own right, interpreted the formation of the UNF as the U.S.'s attempt at curbing the spacefaring power of communist nations.
With or without them, the UNF was going to be created, and it was, on November 23rd, 2010. As an actual governing body, the UNF now had a universal legal code, operated an economy, levied taxes, and maintained a police force. The UNF's resources were pooled from its member states, with the wealthier nations contributing significantly. In the following decade, the UNF brought forth the Great Solar Migration, an era of incredible colonization throughout the Solar System. This mainly included the Moon, Mars, and Venus, as well as a couple moons of the gas giants.
The Moon remained the USSR's home in the Solar System, though UNF cities still exist on the natural satellite, where many millions of people live. Mars and Venus, like most human space colonies, are completely dominated by the UNF. Since the United States was first to reach every other celestial body in the system, the UNF was first to colonize them.
The UNF truly became the organization it is today in 2026 after the Lunar Orbital Crisis, in which American lunar outpost workers detected Soviet nuclear weapons in lunar orbit. This led to an 18-day crisis which saw the UNF pooling their individual militaries in the event of an attack.
Lunar Orbital Crisis
In 2025, the United States launched a fleet of ballistic missile weapons systems into orbit around Earth, which the president stated was "a measure to protect the planet against asteroids and other offworld threats." In classified CIA documents that Russian intelligence networks became aware of, it was revealed that the weapons system had been designed to both target asteroids and points on the lunar surface, in case war broke out between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. and all weapons systems on Earth had been disabled. The Russian government responded to these reports by placing nuclear weapons in lunar orbit, for essentially identical reasons; to the rest of the planet, they were designed to destroy oncoming asteroids that riddle the lunar surface (which would have been reasonable for anything except nuclear weaponry, as the Moon has no atmosphere to burn up meteors. This move was almost immediately answered with the UNF's forming of the United Nations International Collective Emergency Military (UNICEM), which became the UNF Armed Forces even after the conflict was resolved. After 18 days of frantic negotiations, military preparation, and general panic, the conflict ended with both the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. agreeing predetermined lunar borders that the U.S. would never invade, as that posed a real threat to the Soviets considering what the U.S. was willing to do to control Russian client states. Even after the agreement, the UNF decided to establish a permanent Armed Forces, as they needed to be immediately ready in the event of an emergency. This Armed Forces is still in use today, and has long since been the preeminent military in the Milky Way by 2101.
