Ahvenan (ˈɑhʋenɑn)

Ahvenan is the third largest island in the Kotimaa island group, and the furthest east of the three large islands. It is connected to the other islands via the Kotimaa Road, which runs through the port town of Jwmala on the Tyhjä Bay. Ahvenan is almost entirely populated by the Saarelainen people, although there are some communities of Eyjamaður immigrants, and a Tuniit Selkie winter village on the north coast.

Notable Spirits

The people of Ahvenan depend on the sea, like many of the peoples in the Great Ring. However, there is no other place that holds the spirits and gods of the sea in such high esteem, even among the Selkies. The Meren Kirkko, or Cathedral of the Seas in Jwmala is dedicated to all the spirits of The Five Seas, but most especially Ahvto, the King of the Sea. Ahvto is said to live in the depths of the ocean, and to claim rulership of all the spirits of the seas. He is the patron of fisherman, and will grant his chosen the ability to summon fish into their nets, assuring a bountful catch.

Geography

Ahvenan has a irregular shape and coastline, with many inlets and fjords. On the northeastern coast is Tyhjä Bay, which is a nearly circular region over five miles across, and free of any islands. Tyhjä Bay is one of the largest areas of open water in the entirety of the Kotimaa. Legend says that Ahvto cleared the bay of islands himself, in order to give a proper view to the Meren Kirkko. Inland, the island is mostly low hills with a few streams and lakes.

Ecosystem

The coast of Ahvenan is filled with hundreds of small inlets and bays, each hosting a community of shellfish, crustaceans, and seabirds. Seals and otters are common sights, and the waters teem with fish. Inland, there are heavy forests and a few lakes and streams. Among these is the Vaeltava Järvi or Wandering Lake - this body of water is said to move across the landscape seemingly of its own accord. Those who have studied the phenomena are at a loss to explain it, but note that the lake is home to several unusual species that may have unknown magical powers. There is a Saarelainen folktale about a talking perch that lives in the lake and can grant wishes, but this may not be based in fact. The Wandering Lake is never seen to be moving, but simply vanishes from one spot and reappears in another, and has even been known to flood unlucky buildings upon arrival.
