Auxilia

A province territory or settlement under the Junii Empire is not allowed to form it's own militias. Instead, they may recruit local populace into an Auxilia company, which is part a part of the empires vast military hierarchy.

The Junii auxilia traditionally act as an officially sanctioned militia or town guard. They are typically recruited from a province or settlement to guard the walls and patrol the local infrastructure.

Auxilia recruits are chosen at the discretion of a captain, who is responsible for the organisation and delegation of jobs to auxilia. Captains have some privileges, but are still paid a low wage, and are automatically outranked by Legionaries.

An auxilia earns very little coin, but it often beats the life of a lowly peasant. They are poorly trained and under-equipped, having being given a basic standardised leather chest-plate and helmet, and a short spear or bow as armament.

The average day of an auxilia involves long, often tedious guard duties, as well as civil services and resolving disputes between citizens. In time of war, Auxilia are often put to work digging or building fortifications, and maintaining roads for the legion to march upon.
