Aurelia

Territories

Aurelia occupies the entire land around Mt. Sera from the Sharook Sea to the Marook Sea, and from the edge of the Arjun to the Alaminster Hills. This land was contested long ago by the humans and elves during their Great War, but since then have fallen under the dominion of the Aurelians.

Military

Aurelia boasts the strongest military of the Eightfold Nations. In addition to protecting the lands of Aurelia from outside incursion, this military has also assisted the other nations in defending against orc attacks. The Aurelian Military is composed of four pieces working in tandem with one another.
  1. The Aurelian Army: The Army is organized into legions, of which there are over a hundred at any given time. A single legion will have around 5,000 regular soldiers, plus an equal number of support troops who fulfill other duties such as maintenance of equipment, supply lines, and reconnaissance. The Aurelian Army is housed in several locations, primarily in the border cities of Ascalon, Tyrian, Vesuna, Tripolis, and Daruvius. Ten legions are always kept in reserve at the capital of Aurelia.
  2. The Aurelian Navy: Housed at the major port cities of Adurni and Anderitum (and a small contingent in Pharos), the Aurelian Navy has ten fleets, five in the Marook Sea, and five in the Sharook Sea. These fleets are always rotating in their patrols of the major sea lanes.
  3. The Aurelian Airforce: Thanks to the advent of airship travel, the Aurelian military possesses one of the strongest air forces in the world. With three fleets housed in the mountain cities of Genua, Berytos, and Vesuna, and a fourth fleet housed temporarily at the Oasis at Glass Pillars, the Aurelian Air Force is a couple hundred airships strong at any given time.
  4. The Janissaries: Though not considered an official branch of the military, the "Arsenal" as some have taken to nickname it is the magical specialists who work in the three other branches. These magic-wielders, called Janissaries (a combination of two words, "mujannis" which is a mage, and "mercenary") work in every level of the military, from simple support to front line combat. They are not strictly wizards, sorcerers, or warlocks. Some are clerics and alchemists with an aptitude for healing, some are battle smiths or artillerists instilling their inventions with magic, and some are the paladins charging near the front of the battle.

Religion

In addition to the worship of Al-Hakeem, who forms the basis of Aurelian culture, there is also a large temple dedicated to Clarus, the goddess of Light and Day. The three archangels Nyrros, Corallon Larenthian, and Moradin each also have temples of influence in Aurelia. These five deities together are the most widely regarded among the Aurelians.

Agriculture & Industry

Since its founding, Aurelia has been a strong agricultural power. The hills and plains around Mt. Sera are fed by the rivers Nahr and Kana', making them fertile and perfect for crop rotation. There are yearly harvests of wheat and barley, as well as large orchards for fruit production like apples, citrus, and prunes. Large fields are kept empty for grazing cattle, flocks of sheep, and herds of horses.   In recent centuries, there has been a steady shift towards industry. Water wheels capture the fast moving rivers and use it to power factories. Around Aurelia, there have been factories for textiles, food production, and meat processing. A small steel industry has also grown up, but it barely competes with Dhardaral.

Trade & Transport

For the first thirty years of Aurelia's existence, ninety percent of trade traveled on the Nahr and Kana' Rivers with the help of the tritons, who brought cargo through the city from east to west, in exchange for a small fee paid to Aurelia for the use of their warehouses, docks, and taverns. Once they were established with a small military, Aurelia built the major highways moving north and south, connecting Clarus and Scuros. The cities of Tripolis and Tyrian were the second and third Aurelian cities to be established for the purposes of extending the trade routes to Aurelia's allies in Emberwood, Hornduril, and Mythal Thalore.   The entire land of Aurelia is now banded by the "Ring Road," connecting the major cities around Aurelia. In the past century, new railroad inventions by the tortles and the dwarves have sped transportation even further. Lightning rails have further increased the speed and flexibility of Aurelian transportation.

Mythology & Lore

It is believed among Aurelians that Cataclysm represented a great battle between the forces of Clarus and the forces of Scuros for supremacy of who would rule and who would be greater. On Scuros' side was Chaos, a primordial force of destruction and eternal decay of all things. Clarus won in the end, splitting Scuros in two, which is represented by the two moons above and the near total split of the southern continent. Chaos was sealed away by Al-Hakeem by the four mountain chains with Mt. Sera linking them together, and there was peace.

Divine Origins

When the Great Human-Elf War ended, a small tribe of half-elves who had sought to escape the conflict found shelter on the slopes of Mt. Sera. Holy people and clerics in this tribe started receiving visions which led them to the top of Mt. Sera. It is believed that they received messages from Al-Hakeem to establish their city on these slopes and guard the mountain from further conflict and anyone else who would take possession of it.   The new civilization, which called themselves "Aurelians" or "golden ones," built their city on the low slopes of the mountain. Based on the teachings of the clerics, they built their entire society around Al-Hakeem. Al-Hakeem asked the Aurelians for their names, which they gave, and the Aurelians began naming themselves in the pattern of Al-Hakeem.   Some years later, instructions came down through the clerics from Al-Hakeem about how to select a king. The first Parliament was formed with representatives from all of the families, and they selected the first king. This first king was given the name of al-Malik which allowed him to sit upon the throne at the top of the mountain. After that first king, each subsequent king was adopted by the reigning monarch, confirmed by the parliament, and given the name of al-Amir, all according to the direction of Al-Hakeem.
