Muspelheim (World of Fire)
Home of the Muspelhir Giants.
Geography
Muspelhir is a fiery planet, riddled with active volcanoes and barren deserts. The continents the planet once had were shattered into countless smaller islands long ago. Many of the islands continue to grow in size to this day due to frequent eruptions pouring lava into the surrounding waters and hardening it.
Ecosystem
Ash filled skies that block large amounts of sunlight has caused vegetation above sea on Muspelhir to become highly specialized and scarce. Most of the planet is covered either in swirling gray desert and rocky mountains with patches of dusty plains. Volcanoes, lava geysers, and hot springs can be found in great abundance. At first glance Muspelhir seems to be very barren, but it is actually a planet teeming with life. The majority of the biological life can only be found underground or under the ocean.
Localized Phenomena
The Chaos Worldsoul contributes to the volatile nature of both the planet and it's inhabitants.
History
Much of pre-Aesir Muspelheim is a complete mystery, considering that the Muspelhir never bothered to write any of it down. With land and resources being scarce, the Muspelhir tribes learned to live in constant war and conflict with one another. The largest and most violent of the tribes during the times reign of Odin Allfather was led by a Muspelhir called Surtr the Destroyer. Being extremely territorial, the fire giants made it exceptionally clear to the all the Old Aesir that they would kill them on sight without hesitation. However, they were completely defenseless against the highly advanced weaponry of the Aesir, and were thus beaten into begrudged submission. Foreseeing Muspelhir slaves would be more trouble than they're worth, the Aesir allowed the giants to keep most of their freedom, so long as they allowed the Aesir unlimited access to their chaos worldsoul. The giants agreed but held a vehement hate for the Aesir in their hearts. Especially Surtr.
The Muspelhir played a major role in the devastation of Ragnorok, but lost their beloved leader in the process. However with their sworn enemies defeated, this gave the Muspelhir an opportunity to turn inward and reevaluate their customs of war and violence. As a society they were quickly facing overpopulation on the primary continent of Muspelheim, and it was this issue that propelled their culture into the future. With no other options, the entirety of the Muspelhir tribes laid aside their weapons and picked up their smithing tools. By harvesting the lava within their volcanoes and pouring it into the ocean the Muspelhir worked together to build an enormous obsidian bridge that crossed the ocean from one continent to the another. The Blackstone Bridge remains standing to this day and serves as an eternal monument to the Muspelhir that they can accomplish more together than they can apart.
