Landing

Landing marks the spot where the remains of the Grand Adventure fleet came to shore on Ralcondray.  It is deep inside the island's bay, at the mouth of the river that feeds it.

Purpose / Function

While the colony was centered in what is now Old Vitgrud, Landing served both as a memorial and a lookout point.

Alterations

The first improvements to Landing since it was created include a number of docks and other harbor infrastructure.  Plans are in the works for a metalworking plant and factory to provide materials for the construction of a series of conduits reaching from the Cluster Islands to Ralcondray.

History

Landing's plain was the site of the first encampment. After the Grand Adventure anchored in the bay, the colonists spent several days transferring supplies to shore and then salvaging all usable materials from the boats. Progress was slow because many refused to assist, convinced they would be rescued in the immediate future.  Only when the food supplies fell dangerously low were Vitat and Grudain able to convince them to leave the ship and go foraging.  While the foraging parties were ashore, Grudain ordered the fleet's useless hulks hauled onto land and burned. The metaphor was clearly understood, and the crew quickly erected a temporary camp.

Over the next few months the crew worked on constructing a permanent settlement. All earth removed from the site was carried to Landing and dumped over the fleet's remains, eventually resulting in a series of small hills spaced at regular intervals. A lookout station on the tallest of the hills was staffed regularly to keep an eye on the weather and watch the bay for ships.

After twenty years Vitgrud's leadership shifted to the first Ralcondray-born generation, who harbored no expectations of rescue from outside. Hulwif began her years as Dancinglight by transitioning the colony's population away from the original settlement and into new village centers designed with Ralcondray's seasons and hazards in mind.

From that point on Landing was virtually abandoned until the 2050s Vol, when Zimmira negotiated with the Allied Isles for assistance instead of rescue. The deal finally accepted by both parties will turn Landing into Ralcondray's main port while keeping the hills as a monument to the Grand Adventure and the founders of Vitgrud.
