Sanctuary
Sanctuary is a class G2V star system containing a single naturally-habitable world named Paradiso. Paradiso is home to a diverse collection of native flora and fauna, including a species of amphibious semi-bidepds called Simiae Ramus (commonly known as Simirams), which were deemed near-sapient by Earth-based scientists. After this species' discovery, legislation was passed by the United Leagues of Earth forbidding colonisation of the entire star system. Automated defences were established around Paradiso and at various strategic locations throughout the Sanctuary system beginning in 2413, which were periodically upgraded by Earth. Sanctuary was the only system in the Outer Systems that Earth retained a presence in following the Antimatter Crisis, and the United Leagues still maintain de facto control of much of the system to this day. Notably, Sanctuary contains a gateway that connects to Wolf 359 in Earth Space, which is restricted for ULE military use only.
Paradiso is considered one of the most habitable planets in human space, and there has long been pressure on the ULE, particularly by human supremacists, to allow settlement of the world. Additionally, Sanctuary is located in a strategic position in the Outer Systems, and is thus coveted by the Federal Republic of Zeta Tucanae, the Congressional Republic of Orizont, and the Outer Systems Alliance alike. Currently, the system is owned by the Confederation of Tinia, whose populace reside primarily on the moons of Tinia. The ULE maintains an exclusion zone within the Palisade Belt, forcing the people of Tinia to remain on the outskirts of the system, much to their chagrin.
Geography
History
During the Tavastian War, a fleet of Tavastian ships equipped with antimatter torpedoes (in a departure from traditional Tavastian doctrine) was deployed to Sanctuary, with the likely intent of neutralising the Earth forces in the region and destroying Paradiso. The fleet is assumed to have been intended to act as a third invasion prong across the Outer Systems, which may well have overwhelmed coalition forces in Zeta-Tucanae space. However, upon the fleet's arrival, it was quickly devastated by the state-of-the-art defence platforms in the Palisade Belt. While about half of the fleet managed to break through to Paradiso, their antimatter torpedoes were intercepted by orbital defences before they could reach the planet, and the ships either destroyed or forced to surrender.
News of this defeat was suppressed by Tavastian propaganda, and took time to reach Earth. Once news did reach Earth, little attention was brought to it by news services, and thus knowledge of this event has remained largely obscure in the Outer Systems.
