Adeline Shani ii
Adeline Shani, second of his name
It was a treasure for both myself and Florine to receive the diaries of Adeline (the second of his name), as it is known among the family that he was outcasted from his family, though the reason itself remained unknown. After this fallout, the Shani family feared their line had died out until Adeline's son appeared nearly twenty years later.
Imagine my surprise, then, when a messenger from far off Calda arrived bearing very delicate documents. Unlike the diaries which Florine gave to me, which have been meticulously copied across generations, The Caldan Journals are carefully preserved originals. Adelines diaries and letters reveal that he, like Florine, determined that he could best contribute to reuniting the broken forms of magic by cooperating with Scavengers. His family did not take kindly to this alliance, and it was for this that he was cast out.
Adeline was born in 780, and from the writings of his father, Evan (first of his name), it is clear that he identified as a boy from a very early age, though his parents originally believed otherwise. This debate apparently ended quickly, however, as later entries, as well as Evan's letter to Adeline, always refer to him as his son. Nevertheless, there is no indication that he ever chose to use a different name, despite Adeline typically being considered a woman's name. It is likely that he felt a connection with his mythological namesake that he did not want to sever.
As a teenager, Adeline made alliances with local Scavengers, much to the chagrin of his family. The ensuing conflict eventually led Adeline to leave the Seer community in which he lived. His journals indicate that at this time, he would sometimes present as a woman, if he "felt the ocassion suited," though he usually indentified as a man. He also continued to wear his hair long, in the Caldan style, meaning strangers sometimes identified him as a woman, which he rarely chose to correct. It was in Calda that he met Hubertus Fenwick, his future lover and husband, who helped him found the Caldan Magic Society. For the last millenium, they have been making the same strides as Florine's family. I have heard rumor that there are no Scavengers in Calda, and at last I understand why.
Adline died shortly after the birth of his son, Rane (the third of his name). Rane was raised by Hubertus into adulthood, at which time he returned to take his place as Head Mistwalker, as he suspected Adeline would have wanted. He left Adeline's journals in Calda, however, as he feared the Seer family might destroy them if he brought them back. His fears were likely founded, as even in Florine's childhood, Adeline's name was spoken in whispers.
