Alviss Dean

CW: transphobia, violent death, forced marriage
Most of the information found about Alviss Dean comes from the diaries of his son. Though his wife also wrote some about him, there are almost no letters or diary entries from Alviss himself. From what I have been able to gather, Alviss was born in 1053, in a Werewolf community near Albano Lake. As an adult, he left the community, most likely because he refused to conform to gender norms in his community.

He was also odd in that he was not interested in taking the usual canine form that werewolves take, but that of an alligator. But he found a kindred spirit in his love of water creatures, and married a werewolf woman who also chose an alligator form. They lived on the lake until students from the Mistwalker school on the far side killed his wife while in her alligator form.

Saddened and angered by wife's death, Alviss all but abandoned his human form, living only as an alligator and giving rise to the myth of the Albano Lake Monster. After numerous sightings, a couple of actual deaths finally led the Head Mistwalker, Adeline (third of her name), to investigate.

According to Adeline's diary, she was impressed by Alviss's fortitude. She didn't want to have him executed for his crimes, but also could not leave him to murder her Mistwalkers. So she made him an offer--marry her and live. She herself was uninterested in marriage, but considered it her duty to bear an heir. Alviss would likely make a good genetic match, and could teach his shapeshifting gift to their child.

Alviss later admitted to his son that he had no desire to marry anyone other than his first wife. But Adeline's immortality (apparently she stabbed herself in the chest while making her proposition) was enough to convince him this was the only way to escape his execution. So he agreed to the bargain. The next year Penny (first of his name) was born.

Alviss doted on his son and did teach him werewolf magic, but left the Seer community and returned to the lake immediately after Adeline's death in 1096. Penny lived with him there for several years, but eventually returned to take on his role as the new Head Mistwalker. Sightings of the lake monster continued for several years after Alviss's death in 1904, but the descriptions of the monster no longer depicted an enormous, toothy lizard, but a grey, humped shape in the water.

Thank you so much! I think "sad alligator man" should be the subtitle for this article.
