Angela Eskar
CW: ghosts, estrangement
According to the journals of Rane Shani (second of his name), he met Angela Eskar as a teenager during a Ghost Speaker initiation, and based on the language he uses, he was smitten with her from the beginning.
Though raised by ghost speaker parents who likely did what they could to prepare her for the ceremony, Angela was overcome by the visions of death she witnessed that night. Rane's diary mentions her "gasping for breath as she turned her face to the moon." He was able to save her life by speaking to her and helping her mind return to the land of the living. I believe it is likely that Angela developed Sight Sickness, as she continued to struggle with seeing the dead for the rest of her life.
Unfortunately, Angela's condition isolated her from her people, who had little understanding of it or how to treat it. She was often criticized for "neglecting her duties" as a ghost speaker. As they grew older, Rane became a regular companion, and she didn't venture to haunted areas around him, trusting on him to be able to save her if the ghosts "stole her spirit" ever again.
When Rane revealed to her that he was part of the Head Mistwalker Family, Angela was, if anything, relieved. This, to her, was an explanation of why Rane was so good at bringing her back from the brink of death. Though she didn't have the same deep romantic feelings as he companion, she agreed to marry him, knowing that he would care for her. For his part, Rane never tried to push her into an uncomfortable situation, but was clear that he was expected to bear an heir. In 515, Kellii Shani (third of his name) was born, though Angela insisted he never be initiated into the ghost speakers. She also urged her husband to end his own involvement with them after Kellii was born, as his immortality would no longer protect him.
Angela remained separated from the Ghost Speakers for the rest of her life, and did not speak to her parents again after she married. She feared that they would try to convince her son to join them. Kellii even writes that on her death bed, she confided that her greatest fear was that she would one day become a spirit haunting people as the ghosts of the dead haunted her. Kellii held her hand during her last breaths and promised that he would walk with her into the land of the dead to ensure she would have a restful afterlife.
