Ecken Nepun
This article is narrated by Tony
It is easier for me to speak of Ecken Nepun than it is for previous librarians because like me, Ecken was a Voyager. More specifically, his mother was a voyager. His father was a man of some importance, who did not want others to know he had a child out of wedlock, so he sent Ecken to live with his uncle on Co'ar Island.
Growing up among Illusionists, it was only natural that Ecken go through training himself. During training, he was paired with Gloria Shani (third of her name), and the two grew to know each other quite intimately. Gloria seemed to share Ecken's interest in astronomy, and they remained close even after she bested him in the second half of training.
They drew closer after completing their training, and even developed a brief sexual relationship though they tried to remain professional with one another in public. When Gloria became pregnant and revealed that she was the Head Mistwalker, Ecken was distraught. He left Co'ar Island without completing his duty, leaving behind only a letter for his uncle. In this letter, he explained he felt he had been used by Gloria, and likened her to actions to his own father's "use of his status to lure in my mother." Done with the ways of his father's people, he stole a boat and set sail, "heeding the call" of his mother's.
Ecken did not find other Voyagers though. Instead, he sailed to a cave where he lived out the rest of his life, using illusion magic to hide it from outsiders. Illusionists went looking for him, searching for the deserter, but his uncle soon convinced him that he wasn't worth the effort. His uncle himself spent longer looking for Ecken, but never did find him. Nor did Gloria, who probably searched for him the most, by her account of her diaries. People living in several port cities nearby claimed to have seen a man looking like Ecken, but no one could tell where he lived. He tended to his business in town, and left on his battered boat.
It wasn't until several centuries later that a group of Voyagers found his home, the illusions long since burned out, and discovered his writings and his astronomical studies. We continue to build on Ecken's work to this day.
