Goliath

These sturdy Goldiar, who tower over men  and Elves, find their homes in the high mountains of The Great North Forest. Most Goliaths stand between 7 and 8 feet tall, they are stocky in build and their skin has an almost stone-like texture with colours to match. Competition is the cornerstone of Goliath society. They compete for positions within their mountain clans and those clans compete with each other in friendly competitions as in the case of The Games of a Thousand Days. In general, the killing of Goliaths is considered off limits in the realm of competition. Goliath competitions can involve feats of strength and endurance, the slaying of beasts and monstrosities, or wrestling and mock battles. Many a legend recounts the feats of ancient Goliaths both in conflict with other creatures and in friendly competitions. Both varieties are equally revered.   Though there are clans that occasionally interact with other races, it is very unlikely to meet one in a Human community, and virtually unheard of to even see one in the south. The most common settlement to see a Goliath in is Supi during an event called The Games of a Thousand Days. The Goliaths will likely be trading bits and baubles from there mountains for supplies for their return journey and to supplement their clan's supplies.

Family Names

Goliath family names represent both their clan and their sub family within the clan. Generally the clan name comes first and the family becomes a suffix. For instance, a Goliath of clan Auk and family An has the last name of Aukan. When interacting with outsiders the combined name is used, but the family named is generally used for internal clan interactions. For the most part, family names are simple one syllable words beginning with a vowel sound and ending in consonants. Examples: Al, An, Ed, Il, Ok, Ol, On, Ug, Oof.   Clan names are usually a little more complicated than family names, but follow the same general rule of starting with a vowel and ending with a consonants. Examples: Al, Auk, Eteg, Ikal, Oruk, Ulp.   New clans are created when Goliath distinguishes themselves through a particularly impressive feat, such as slaying a dragon, defeating a Roc, or leading the Goliath clans to victory as War Chief. The new clan is given the first name of the Goliath. All Goliaths who wish to join the new clan can do so, bringing with them their family names.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Goliaths speak one United language, known as Gol. Though each clan has it's own dialect, they all share one written language and each dialect isn't different enough to prevent meaningful communication.
