Obyrith

Before the Abyss, before the Fall, before Atropus, there were the Obyriths. They had a society outside of The Severed Expanse, a whole universe that was as large as ours. It is no more. The Obyriths attracted attention, through no fault of their own. Atropus, having been banished from the Severed Expanse eons ago, found the Obyriths, their worlds, and their gods. Very few survived the apocalypse, and those that did were changed by the power of the Elder Evil. They were beings of destruction, and death. They were Demons. As Atropus broke through the walls of the Obyrith's world to return to ours, the demons were drawn through the hole, into our world, a world that drove them madder than their creation already had. This created the Abyss, and it has been a plague on both our worlds ever since. A few Obyriths, however, managed to resist the transformation. Twisted by the experience of the destruction of their universe, yes. But they were not demons. These few remaining Obyriths fought on the side of the gods during the Fall, and were the ones who gathered enough power to banish Atropus to the Far Realm. They were abandoned by the gods, however, and left to struggle to survive in the Abyss.
