Reactor Core Venting Tunnel

The Reactor Core Venting Tunnel is a long tunnel that provides thermal venting for and direct access to the Rangeley Orgonon Reactor Core or the surface. Quinn McAlester and Blake Hargreaves discover the tunnel entrance while exploring the forest behind the Wood Lakes Campground on Quimby Pond.

Purpose / Function

Thermal venting of the underground reactor core and emergency egress to the surface.

Alterations

The original mini-rail excavation system was partially removed (near the surface) shortly after construction of the underground facility was completed.

Architecture

An underground tunnel built of reinforced concrete. At the surface, a reinforced concrete bunker-like structure provides entrance and egress to the underground reactor core.

History

The tunnel was originally drilled, strengthened with reinforced concrete, and laid with a mini-railtracks to facilitate the excavation of dirt and rocks to the surface as the underground facility was constructed.
