Ælnean pound

The Ælnean pound is the name of the primary currency in circulation in the Kingdom of Ælnea.

Ælnean coins come in three forms: the pence, the shilling, and the pound. A pence is a coin made out of copper and signifies the smallest amount of currency in the Kingdom. A shilling, a coin made of silver, is equivalent to 10 pence. The gold pound is worth 10 shillings or 100 pence. Each type of coin has a hole bored into the top, so that many coins can have a string pulled through the holes to bind the coins into a stack. In recent years, as trade with Armvíðir to the west has increased, the penningr has begun circulation in the country. In Ælnea the penningr is worth 10 pounds, though these coins are not as common as the native currency.

Each coin has two faces, the crown and crest. The crown side of a coin typically depicts an image of a historical figure or concurrent ruler. Pence coins tend to have the faces of notable knights or baronets, while shillings have the faces of barons and baronesses. Pounds depict side profiles of earls, kings, and other figures of import. To the right or left of the image is text denoting the year the coin was minted, and below the face is the motto of the ruler depicted. The crest depicts the symbols of office or family crest of the corresponding crown, or an image of the locale over which the crown ruled; for example the year 765 pound depicts the face of King Æthelweard, with the text "The Peoples' Shield" underneath on the crown side of the coin, and on the crest is the symbol of the royal family--an elliptical shield with the side-profile head of a wolf baring its fangs emblazoned on it.
