Dillard Portyr

Duke Dillard Portyr

Duke Dillard Portyr was one of the members of Baldur's Gate's Council of Four and a leading patriar of the city. He was assassinated during a political rally to help refugees from the Damnation of Elturel on the 15th of Eleasis, 1497 by Zarielite cultists acting on the orders of fellow Duke Thalamara Vanthampur.

History

Dillard Portyr, the patriarch of the well-established Portyr family, was voted in to become one of Baldur's Gate's Grand Dukes in 1493 following the abdication of Duke Cassimir Roe after the Great Dragon War. Portyr was recognized as a moderate by all who disliked conflict, but unlike the ineffectual Roe was politically savvy enough to act as a compromiser in heated discussions.   In the summer of 1497, the city of Elturel, capital of Elturgard and a historic rival of Baldur's Gate, was damned to Avernus. As the city's was presumed destroyed, as was Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, who had been in Elturel in the time, Baldur's Gate grew increasingly politically unstable. As streams of refugees began flooding into his city, Duke Portyr arranged for scores of refugees to be allowed inside the city walls and given aid, betting on the Elturians becoming permenant residents in the future and thereby securing their support. He also sent a missive for his niece, Blaze Liara Portyr, to return from Chult and claim leadership of the Flaming Fist.   On the 15th of Eleasis, Duke Portyr was giving a political speech to a rally of Elturian refugees gathered for a breakfast event in the Upper City. The Lost Star Detectives, a group of adventurers investigating Duke Thalamara Vanthampur for her connections to the cult of Zariel and Elturel's disappearance, discovered that Duke Portyr was going to be assassinated during his rally. Despite racing to the event to stop it, Duke Portyr was shot with an enchanted arrow from a Zarielite assassin, which opened a temporary portal to the Nine Hells within his body, destroying the duke from the inside out and releasing devils into the Upper City, which the Detectives and the Watch managed to subdue, while one of the Detectives, Arcus Miursa, was able to capture the assassin and deliver him to the Watch.
