Liara Portyr

Duke Liara Portyr

Duke Liara Portyr is one of the curernt members of the Baldur's Gate's Council of Four and a retired Blaze of the Flaming Fist.

History

Born into the illustrious Portyr family, a noble patriar family in Baldur's Gate, Liara was always under the understanding that she would not inherit most of the family's fortune, which would go to her uncle Dillard Portyr and his children. This did not bother Liara, who instead sought out a military career, joining the Flaming Fist, Baldur's Gate's mercenary force.   Liara obtained the rank of Blaze during her time with the Flaming Fist, earning the eye of Ulder Ravengard, the Marshall of the group and the Grand Duke of the city. Ravengard trusted Liara greatly, and in the early 1490s, Liara was assinged to Fort Beluarian in Chult, protecting Baldur's Gate's colony to the south. Due to her posting, Blaze Portyr did not particpate in the Great Dragon War.   In Eleasis of 1497, Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard was on an state visit to Elturel when the city and all of its inhabitants were damned to Avernus in the Nine Hells. However, it was unknown for quite some time that Elturel was not outright destroyed, and Ravengard's presumed death sparked both a crisis in the ranks of the Flaming Fist, now leaderless. Liara was summoned back to the city by her uncle Dillard, now a Duke of the city, to claim the title of Marshal of the Flaming Fist. Opposing Liara's claim was Blaze Beldroth, commander of the city's Seatower fortress, and Blaze Mukar, commander of Wyrm's Crossing in the Outer City. Liara's claim to command the Flaming Fist was backed by Flame Ronald Zodge, commander of the Basilisk Gate.   Shortly upon her arrival to the city, Liara was briefed on the situation on the Flaming Fist Succession Crisis by Zodge, who had meanwhile hired the Lost Star Detectives, a group of adventurers, to help the overburdened mercenaries in investigating cultists of the Dead Three. The Detectives' investigations revealed that the Dead Three cultists were being used by the city's cult of Zariel, which was led by Duke Thalamara Vanthampur. Portyr's attention was still dominated by the succession crisis, but she cautioned the Detectives to be careful acting against Duke while still promising them a reward for their aid.   A few days after the Liara's arrival, Duke Portyr was assassinated during a breakfast rally for Elturian refugees. Understanding that the assassin was sent by Duke Vanthampur, Liara offered the Detectives compensation from Ravengard's personal collection if they could kill the Zarielite duke. She also began besieging the Seatower, stating that Blaze Beldroth's refusal to admit her self-proclaimed position as marshal was tantamount to treason. Portyr also began positioning herself to be elected into the Council of Four in her uncle's place.   After the Detectives killed Vanthampur, Liara paid them in magic items before encouraging them to leave Baldur's Gate until things died down, though she continued to occasionally employ the services of Ruby Hynes, an associate of the Detectives and a Hellrider seeking to keep Elturian refugees safe.   After months of a standoff, Blazes Beldroth and Mukar surrendered to Liara. Seeing which way the wind was blowing, and perhaps cowed by the new unquestioned military commander in the city, Liara was voted by the Parliament of Peers to join the ranks of the Council of Four.   Following the salvation of Elturel in 1498, and the subsequent reveal that Grand Duke Ravengard had survived, Liara Portyr surrendered her title of marhsal back to Ravengard and resigned from her position in the Flaming Fist, understanding the political optics of having one member of the Council of Four subserviant in rank to another. However, Liara did not resign from the Council of Four, despite the demands of some in the city, and as a duke has generally supported Ravengard's positions.
