Helm of Torm's Sight

The Helm of Torm's Sight is a unique artifact of Elturel that allows its wearer to commune with the god Torm. Though it was lost for some time when its original heroic wearer perished in the jungles of Chult, it was returned to its rightful resting place in the Elturian graveyard in 1494.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Helm of Torm's Sight allows its wearer to commune directly with the god Torm. Torm is also to make use of it himself, sending messages to its wearer of his own volition.   While the helm was in Avernus, its power was weakened by the evil veil that surrounds Hell. As such, the only way for its to convey Torm's message to Kinsey Eridanus was by locking itself to her head, forming a perfect seal that allowed Torm to communicate directly.

History

The Helm of Torm's Sight was first bestowed upon a famous paladin of Elturel, who wore the helmet to commune with Torm while slaying evil and protecting good. Their need to help others eventually drove this paladin further and further away from Elturel, and they finally fell in battle in the jungles of Chult, far to the south. Though their body was recovered and returned to Elturel, buried with full honors in the Elturel cemetary, the helmet was presumed lost.   In 1494, the Helm of Torm's Sight was discovered by a Baldurian expedition from their colony in Fort Beluarian. The artifiact, alongside other finds from the expedition, were loaded onto the mercantile vessel Aremag's Blessing and sent back to Baldur's Gate.   However, word of the find spread throughout the Baldurian underworld, and the Mourning Dove, the Guild kingpin of Tumbledown arranged a hiest of Aremag's Blessing, hoping to steal an amulet of the demon lord Orcus and the Helm of Torm's Sight, which he would then give to the Elturian smuggler Buddy Novs to fence back to Elturel, with the profits being split between them.   Though the hiest went according to plan, Buddy sold the Helm to a wealthy Elturian family that then donated it to the city so that it could rest again with its legendary owner. However, Buddy neglected to pay the Mourning Dove or any of the hiest's other associates, namely those that did the physical theft. Angered, the Mourning Dove sent the original thieves to Elturel to shakedown Buddy for the payment, which they just so happened to do so on the day Elturel was damned to Hell, leaving the matter unresolved.   Later that same year, the original group of thieves, now going by the Lost Star Detectives, arrived in Hell seeking to find a way to save Elturel. While there, they were recommended by Pherria Jynks, a surviving preistess of Torm, to seek the Helm and ask for Torm's guidance. The Detectives agreed and fought through the cemetary. Kinsey Eridanus put on the Helm, which locked to her head in order for Torm to convey his message through the veil of Hell. In it, Torm encouraged the Detectives to seek out the Sword of Zariel and follow the lost memories of the hollyphant Lulu. Meanwhile, the other Detectives panicked at Kinsey's state, and Katya Sinaran, a cleric of Kiaransalee, prayed to Torm to undo its bonds, which allowed Torm to do just that once the message was relayed.   Not wanting the Helm to fall into the wrong hand, the Detectives then left Helm with Pherria for the remainder of Elturel's damnation. Following the city's salvation, it was returned to its rightful resting spot.
