Marth Nox

Marth Nox

Marth Nox is a human male and the current leader of the cult of Dispater in Baldur's Gate.

History

Nearly all of Nox's early life is unknown, even to his closest associates. What is known is that by the early 1480s, Nox was leading a small cult of Dispater in Baldur's Gate, specializing in blackmail and information gathering to try and tilt the scales of power his way. Nox also maintained control over the cult by personally tutoring many of its members' children himself   In 1484, Devden Iliric and his wife Yathanae Carhana joined the cult of Dispater with the aim of expanding their already existing information brokering services. As a show of faith and commitment, the two allowed Nox to tutor their daughter Alesine Iliric, who joined a few others in Nox's lessons, including Nalansmyrt Thistlecrag, whose parents were also Dispater cultists.   Nox continued to raise and educate new cult members, but the membership of the cult always remained small, favoring the acumulation of knowledge and power over sheer numbers. However, Nox's tutelage was not perfect, and both Nalansmyrt and Alesine left the cult in the early 1490s, which Nox believed to be a point of personal failure.   Despite these setbacks, the cult continued to flourish and achieved its greatest moment in 1497, when Devden Iliric was elected to the Council of Four, making him one of the city's four dukes. However, despite the immense personal power Duke Iliric now possessed, he was ultimately subserviant to Nox. Though this hold wasn't absolute, as after the Damnation of Elturel, Alesine returned a solar of Lathander and threatened her father with her direct action should the cult ever go too far, styming some of the cult's plans.

Mental characteristics

Morality & Philosophy

Nox truly embodied the Dispaterian ideal that knowledge is true power, being extremely secretive about himself and collecting information that could be wielded against everyone around him, friend or foe. He also expected perferction, especially from those under his tutelage, and was a harsh disciplinarian, leaving many of this students afraid and cowed by him.
