Nalansmyrt Thistlecrag is a rock gnome sorcerer and vigilante from Baldur's Gate.
History
Nalansmyrt was born to Merni and Yotra Thistlecrag on the 6th of Kythorn, 1475 in Baldur's Gate. Before Nalansmyrt was born, the Thistlecrags moved to Baldur's Gate in the pursuit of wealth and power, an unusual ambition among gnomes but common in the larger city. Growing up, Nalansmyrt mostly interacted with the children of other up-and-coming families, but did form a close relationship with a young Alesine Iliric, who Nalansmyrt called "Allie." The Ilirics soon became good family friends, and in the 1480s the Thistlecrags were invited by them to join the Baldurian cult of Dispater in their pursuit of power. Alesine and Nalansmyrt were moved from their traditional schooling and placed in the tutelage of the cult's leader, Marth Nox. Nalansmyrt resented his parents' attitude and the actions of the cult, and when he reached adulthood Nalansmyrt left cult and cut all contact with his parents. He supported himself by taking odd jobs around the city for a few years, where he befriended another worker of odd jobs, the dwarf Jondrotir Forehelm. The two also befriended the young human scholar Vianola Phidi, who had moved to Baldur's Gate for study. The three of them were then joined by Alesine, who found the will to leave the cult of Dispater as well. Affected by their experiences, Nalansmyrt and Alesine led the group of friends as they investigated corruption within Baldur's Gate in their free time. Though they felt like they were doing some good while having fun, the four friends experienced a near-death scare that quickly put an end to their investigations. In 1497, Alesine, as a part of the Lost Star Detectives, began investigating the disappearance of Elturel and the activites of the cult of Zariel in Baldur's Gate. The Damnation of Elturel also spurred Nalansmyrt into action, who began assisting with Duke Dillard Portyr's Cofraternity of Refugee Relief, an organization formed to care for the Elturian refugees. Nalansmyrt, Jondrotir, and Vianola were also assembled by Alesine to help the Detectives investigate Duke Thalamara Vanthampur, the leader of the cult of Zariel. Nalansmyrt was present for Duke Portyr's execution, and afterwards began helping his niece, Liara Portyr, in her bid to secure a ducal seat and the title of marshal of the Flaming Fist, believing she would help the city the most. Alesine left Baldur's Gate with the Detectives to travel to Avernus to save Elturel, and when she returned in 1498 she did so as a solar. Nalansmyrt raced to the recently returned Elturel to check on his best friend and was thrilled to see her, though taken aback at her newfound confidence and sense of purpose. Alesine returned to Baldur's Gate with Nalansmyrt to say goodbye to her friends and give a final word of warning to her parents before departing for Mount Celestia. Nalansmyrt, reinspired by his work in Baldur's Gate and Alesine's work helping Elturel, decided to commit full time to helping the people of Baldur's Gate however he could.
