Yathanae Carhana

Yathanae Carhana

Yathanae Carhana is the shadar-kai wife of Duke Devden Iliric of the Baldur's Gate Council of Four and like her husband is a member of the cult of Dispater. She is also the mother of the former half-elf Alesine Zadava, who is now a solar of Lathander.

History

Born in the Shadowfell, Yathanae left for her own reasons, unsatisfied with the opportunities available to her. She wandered the Material Plane for decades, settling in one place for years or decades before moving on.   By the mid-1400s, Yathanae settled in Baldur's Gate, where she met Devden Iliric, a young human seller of previous stones who covertly dealt in information and secrets. Yathanae chose to marry Devden in 1472. For Devden, this was another step towards building power and influence for herself, but for Yathanae it seemed more to be another way to keep herself amused. While the two supported each other in their goals, they did not appear to love each other.   Nevertheless, in Nightal of 1474 Yathanae gave birth to her only child with Iliric, Alesine Zadava Iliirc. Though Alesine was raised with all of the best tutors and resources her parents could bring, her household was not a loving one, and Yathanae did not give Alesine much attention.   In 1484, the family was connected with the Baldurian cult of Dispater. Devden decided to join the cult, hoping to further his own lust for power, and Yathanae followed him with less outward interest. Alesine was turned over to the cult's leader, Marth Nox, for the remainder of her education.     In 1494, now an adult, Alesine left the cult, though she was threatened by its remaining members, including her father, to not disclose its secrets.     In 1497, Devden was elected by the Parliament of Peers to fill the vacant seat on the Council of Four left by the death of Thalamara Vanthampur. Devden accepted gladly, and Yathanae achieved new prominence as the wife of a duke, though she never took to this new role with any particular zeal.    In 1498, Alesine returned to Baldur's Gate after having saved the city of Elturel from damnation. Now a solar of Lathander, Alesine threatened her parents to keep the activities of their cult to a minimum, lest she return again to the city and stop them directly. Devden, having achieved all the power he ever dreamed of, refused. Yathanae appeared disinterested throughout the conversation, and Alesine again left them.

Intellectual Characteristics

Those that meet Yathanae remark often about her disinterest in the world around her. Whether it the result of her long-lived nature as an elf, the result of the unknown incident that led to her leaving the Shadowfell, or some mental burden is hard to say.
