Poisoned Poseidon
The Poisoned Poseidon is a tannery in Baldur's Gate's Brampton neighborhood that once served as a pirate ship for the feared warlock Kelton Hunter.
In the early 1490s, following the Baldur's Gate Uprising, the tannery was secretely taken over by cultists of the Dead Three. This connection was discovered by the Lost Star Detectives in 1497 while they were investigating a series of murders committed by the cult. After fighting and killing most of the cultists hiding in the tannery, it was seized by the Flaming Fist and sold to a legitimate organization.
Architecture
Despite its current use as a tannery, the Poisoned Posiedon's history as a ship is plainly evident. The deck of the ship, which serves as its entrance, sits well above street level and is only accesible via a set of stairs. The hull of the ship, which acts similar to a basement, is actually on ground level but is inacesible from the street.
History
For decades the Poisoned Poseidon served as warship. In the mid-15th century, it was commanded by the fearsome Kelton Hunter, an infernal warlock of terrible power who commanded a fleet that terrorized the Sword Coast.
In 1457, Hunter led his fleet in a daring raid of Baldur's Gate's harbor. During the fighting, the Poseidon was swept up in a magical duel between Hunter and a group of adventurers, causing the ship to become washed ashore in Brampton. The crew of the Poseidon was quickly overwhelmed by the Flaming Fist, though Hunter was never found with rumors swirling that he was dragged into Hell by devils for his failure.
For years, no one was willing to pay to have the ship's hulk removed, wary of lingering curses. The rotting ship became a breeding ground for rats and a base for various criminals. However, when the dock's retaining wall underwent repairs in the 1470s, the area around the broken Poseidon became home to new construction, and the skeleton of the ship was used as the foundation for a new tannery.
Following the radical restructuring of Baldur's Gate's underworld after the defeat of Lysara the Grin in 1491, the Poisoned Poseidon, as the tannery was also known, was covertly taken over by cultists of the Dead Three, using the business of the tannery as a front. It was from the tannery that Dead Three cultists, on the orders and request of Duke Thalamara Vanthampur, committed a series of murders against Elturians and the children of Elturians in the early days of the Damnation of Elturel. However, the cult's actions were discovered by the Lost Star Detectives, who raided and killed most of the cultists inside. The Detectives then reported their findings to the Flaming Fist, who seized control of the tannery until it could be sold to a legitimate buyer.
