The Yawning Portal

Built by the adventurer Durnan over the ruins of Halaster Blackcloak's tower, The Yawning Portal takes it's name from the main entrance down into the Undermountain underneath Waterdeep. The most famed tavern in the city, and some would argue most of the Sword Coast, the yawning Portal is often the first stop for visiting adventurers, always brimming with talk of perilous quests and epic feats. Many gather here for the atmosphere, and many more conduct their business here, keeping an eye on potential recruits to various factions within the city.
The Portal itself is the key feature, a deep pit over which Durnan has built a lift and pully system with which to lower adventurers down, to try their luck in the dungeons underneath. Betting on the success (or survival) of the adventurers is encourages, and Durnan takes a fee from each group making the attempt. Particularly exciting is when the opposite occurs, it's not rare for the monsters of the Undermountain to climb their way up and attack the Yawning Portal. When such beasts don't fall to the many capable warriors feasting above, Durnan himself is more than a match, wielding his greatsword.
Permanent staff include Bonnie and Cassie who serve drinks and food, and tend to the guest rooms. Mattrim Mereg is the permanent Bard of the tavern.
