In theory and diplomacy, the Karl were considered primus inter pares, regarded as first among equals among other Allamaren monarchs across The Terrable. In practice, a Karl was only as strong as his army and alliances, including marriage alliances, made him. Over the ages the title evolved into an elective monarchy, with the Karl being chosen by his most important vassals, the Prince-Electors.
The Karl is widely regarded as the supreme being, creator, and principal object of faith in the The Former Allamaran Empire. The Karl has also been conceived as the source of all moral obligation, and the "greatest conceivable existent".
