Personal history

Jurao was born to famous beast hunters Emedao and Jeakke, and spent a good deal of his childhood growing up in the beast hunter band led by the Mafokuraes family. Unfortunately, his mothers both died fighting a beast known as an Ice Shriek when he was still a child.   According to their wishes, he was went to live with his aunt and Jeakke's sister, Nevve - a blacksmith working in the Demon King’s Castle. Being of age, Jurao began apprenticing under her after they'd both taken some time to grieve. During this time, he met Exka and Feyl - a pair of noble cousins around his age. Jurao often helped Exka climb over the wall of the smithy to get to the army training yards against her family's wishes, while Feyl would eventually come to look for her and end up being distracted.   At 200 years old, the demon age of adulthood, Jurao decided to join the Demon King's Army. He saw it as a way to honor the legacy of his warrior mothers without causing his aunt to worry too much about his safety. Nevve, who had sworn off weaponsmithing, made an exception for her nephew - wanting to ensure he had the best weapons he possibly could. So with her blessing, he became a foot soldier. At the same time, Exka became an officer due to her noble rank - but the pair remained friends.   Jurao moved up the ranks quickly due to his natural combat prowess and eventually made officer rank. This also conveyed him a noble title, and he ran into Feyl once more - he had become one of the many valet-hopefuls, attending many a social event to find a higher-ranked noble to serve as an attendant. Unable to leave Jurao to flounder amongst noble society, Feyl took to explaining and teaching Jurao court manners and expectations. Jurao also soon came under the command of Minaz, the daughter of the Demon General of the time - along with Exka.   Despite Feyl's best efforts, Jurao's early centuries as an officer were marked by his lack of noble propriety - not that this troubled him. He chose a commoner in the administrative staff as his personal secretary, often spoke what was considered out of turn, and on one notable occasion knocked out a higher-ranked noble at the request of Princess Morvvan. This last incident, however, brought him to the attention of the Demon King of the time, Ergirri, who began follow Jurao's career with amusement.   Jurao continued to move up the ranks, eventually becoming the next Demon General - with Minaz as his second. Demon King Ergirri took on the role of mentor, seeing great potential in his new General. Jurao proved this right in many ways, one of which was being the first General never to fall to a human Champion - earning him the nickname 'Unbreakable Wall'.   When it came time for Ergirri to retire, he surprised the court by nominating Jurao for the position rather than one of his own children. The princelins themselves had no issues with this, having no desire for the responsibilities of kingship. Even with this nomination, however, Jurao still faced the Royal Trials and Thousand Caves of Torment before he could Ascend to Demon King.   After passing through these trials and becoming Demon King, he established his Heads of Staff before traveling the Demon Realm on a Union Campaign. Those unhappy with his Ascension had a right to attempt to cede from the United Demon Realm, which they could win by sustaining a siege for ten days. It took Jurao thirty years, but he was successful in preventing any city from ceding.   When he returned to the capital of Ae°calikaslavven, he discovered the castle gardens in an incredible state of health. When no one took credit for their care, however, he realized that the gardens - full of sentient demonic plants - had to be hiding their caretaker for some unknown reason.   With his magical authority as Demon King, Jurao forced the gardens to reveal their mystery caretaker - a human that had stumbled into the Demon Realm by mistake. After hearing his story and seeing his good work, Jurao appointed Braelin as the official Royal Gardener.

Volume I:
In Which a Demon King Does Not Have a
Romantic Interest in His Human Gardener

After appointing Braelin as Royal Gardener, Jurao is not surprised it takes time for his Department Heads to adjust. Braelin himself does not hesitate to begin making requests for the gardens, which causes some initial tension with Festi, the Quartermaster, as they are kept up late. It is suggested Braelin hire an assistant to ease his transition into his role, and the human picks a young noble named Gaele - a great admirer of Jurao.   On his second day as Royal Gardener, Braelin makes a case for the gardens being deserving of respect. Jurao decides to apologize for taking the gardens for granted, and the other Department Heads join him as a show of solidarity and support for the King's newly appointed Gardener. Jurao and Braelin continue spending time with each other, causing many to believe the King has a crush on the human.   While Jurao's friends bring this to his attention, he quickly dismisses the idea. He has never had a romantic interest in any one before, so it does not seem likely he has one now. Even if his behavior does resemble that of a person experiencing romantic attraction, he is sure this is a coincidence. He only smiles more around Braelin because he finds the human man amusing, and only directly backs up his decisions as Royal Gardener because Braelin is so new to his station and at a disadvantage due to the general dislike of humans most demons have.   The rumors, however, are so far spread that one staff member asks about the King's feelings for Braelin during a meeting intended to address questions and concerns about Braelin's appointment. Jurao is grateful for the opportunity to clear up the misunderstandings - explaining how he has Braelin walk beside instead of behind him due to the man having very little presence; how Braelin has been sleeping on the couch in his recieving room to avoid nobles asking him questions; and other such matters. The only question he doesn't have an answer to is why he frequently reaches out to touch Braelin, often without realizing.   But it hardly seems important.

Education

Jurao's parents first taught him basic camping and survival skills, so he could help with those kinds of tasks while they were on hunting campaigns with the rest of their hunting band.   When he was taken in by his aunt, he was taught reading and writing at the school for the children of castle employees. She also made him her apprentice in blacksmithing, which he took to quite well. His favorite activity in this regard was locksmithing, which led to a hobby of lockpicking.   Shortly before he reached adulthood and joined the army, his cousin Ena trained him in the Mafokuraes dual-weilding sword style. He would later learn his aunt had realized he intended to join the army and wrote to Ena on his behalf.    After joining the army, he was taught hand-to-hand combat. When he became an officer and began moving up the ranks, he was taught battle tactics and strategy. His friend Feyl also insisted on teaching him court etiquette. This would later be useful when he Ascended to Demon King.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Only General to have never lost a battle with a Champion.

Morality & Philosophy

Jurao believes in rewarding merit and ability - appointing the best person for a job or task regardless of their background. While he's not immune to personal bias - having hired his secretary on the belief he would be easy to get along with - he does not allow it to overrule his more logical side. That is, given a choice between hiring a friend with no experience in a field and an expert in that field, he would go with the expert every time; however, between a friend and an equally competent stranger, he would choose a friend for the more stable relationship.

History

Jurao first met Ena when he was 150 years old, and she 230. Though he was not aware until later, his grandmother Raoyl sent Ena to teach him the Mafokuraes dual sword style after his aunt Nevve wrote to her, having realized Jurao's intent to join the army.   The two still exchange letters, though mostly Jurao recieves letters due to the transiant nature of beast hunter bands. His replies are sent to Engapoylao, where Ena reads them in bulk.
