Siren

The native denizens of the Siren Realm. Sirens are known for their problem solving through mechanical engineering, a result of their high Gravitas and the highly charged atmosphere of their realm.   There are three variants of sirens, arising from the influence of other species.   Siren   The original form of the species, unaltered by outside influence.   Seraphim   A subset of siren that arose from siren and human relations, where the human heritage was carried through siren generations.   Harpy   A subset of siren that arose from siren and kinfolk relations, where the kinfolk heritage was carried through siren generations.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Sirens are bipedal with avian legs. They are too heavy for true flight but have wings that allow them to glide. They have two eyes, two arms, and fused front teeth that form a point similar to a beak tip.   Compared to traditional sirens, seraphim have smaller wings incapable of even gliding and plantigrade feet.   Compared to traditional sirens, harpies have feathers covering the majority of their bodies and hands that are similar in structure to avian feet.

Genetics and Reproduction

Sirens reproduce sexually, and pregnancy usually lasts around nine months.   Besides other sirnes, they can reproduce with humans and kinfolk.

Growth Rate & Stages

  • Early childhood: 0-7 years
  • Middle childhood: 7-12 years
  • Late childhood: 12-18 years
  • Adolescence: 18-22 years
  • Young Adulthood: 22-40 years
  • Middle Adulthood: 40-65 years
  • Late Adulthood: 65-90 years
  • Elderly: 90-120 years

Ecology and Habitats

As the Siren Realm is a high-energy environment, sirens thrive in partially aerial environments with thinner air and slightly heavier gravity.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Omnivorous - main food supply comes from hydroponic gardens on ships and in individual homes, supplemented by hunting and animal husbandry.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Sirens have excellent eyesight, but only in daylight conditions.

Civilization and Culture

History

Sirens started as very small communities - the ever-shifting nature of their environment made large-scale settlements almost impossible. Very early forms of long distance travel included an individual wearing a straightening frame and being shot out of a catapault to glide, but this was only moderately accurate.   Over time, however, they began building airships - much more reliable than gliding, and less tiring. From there, dwarven technology began to grow - from floating cities on stabilized landmasses and gigantic ships to small craft, intercity zipline networks, and even magnetically powered weaponry and defenses.   They also developed hydroponic farming methods for a stable food supply aboard ships, and other auxiliary technologies not found in other realms.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Sirens often form relationships with Human and Kinfolk partners, due to the close relationship of their Realms. These are not seen as particularly special for being commonplace.     Due to a distrust of magic - and cultural derision decrying it as the easy way to accomplish a goal compared to more difficult engineering solutions - sirens tend to frown on relationships with Elf, Fae, and Dragon partners.     Sirens rarely interact with members of the Strength Triad, and so see relationships between any of those species as novel.
Lifespan
120 years
Average Height
Siren: 3.5-5ft | Seraphim: 4.5-5.5ft | Harpy: 3-4ft
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Siren skin comes in various shades of gray to black. Some have dappled patterns. Seraphim may additionally have human skin tones.   Feathers tend towards purples, pinks, reds, and blues. Harpy feathers tend toward black, grays, and browns.
