Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The second in command of S.H.I.E.L.D, answerable directly to the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. 

Duties

Assisting in the day to day running and decision making of SHIELD.
Directors are expected to never be active duty unless absolutely unavoidable, but the Deputy-Director may sometimes do field-work if deemed necessary.

In recent years the possition has also come to cover liason to the Avengers.

Responsibilities

As well as assisting in the running of S.H.I.E.L.D, a Deputy-Director must be ready to step into command in the event that the Director is injured or is otherwise incapable of fulfilling their duties.

History

The possition was created by Peggy Carter in the 70s, formalising a system that had been in place unofficially for some time.
