Ryas

Ryas is a planet in the Psori system, which was formerly part of the Skrullian Empire.

Ecosystem

The surface of Ryas is between 50-70% water: the planet's three moons create extreme tides which come several miles inland at their height, drastically reducing the amount of dry land.

As a result, the planet's native sapients, the Druffs, live far inland. Originally evolving in the frozen tundra which makes up the majority of the northern hemisphere, overpopulation has lead to them spreading out into other biomes, although their dense fur means they cannot survive in the dense tropical forests of the equator.

The planet has gravity of 10.787315 m/s2, within the typical range of inhabitted planets, but the atmosphere is unusually dense, at 7.15 x 1018 kg.

History

Little is known of the history of the planet prior to its invasion by the Skrullian Empire, during the reign of Dorek V. Skrull anthropologists, studying the myths and culture of the Druff, have theorised that the planet's largest moon is relatively recent, and caused devestating natural disasters, reshaping the environment, and with it, the religion of the Druffs.

Druffs reproduce asexually, and their reproductive cycle is tied to the moons of the planet, though whether this is cultural or biological is unknown. Due to having three moons, the planet experiences 35-39 full moons per cycle, resulting in the Druffs reproducing for approximately 2/3rds of the year. In order to curb overpopulation, the Druffs believed their deity, Blessed-of-Litters, would send them signs not to reproduce on certain days.

However, according to Skrull theology, the patron deities of conquered races become part of the Skrull pantheon, as servants of the Skrull gods Sl'gur't and Kly'bn. The Druffs, who have been noted by anthropologists as unusually willing to believe anything told to them, interpretted this belief to mean that Blessed-of-Litters could no longer communicate with them.

Without religious injunctions on reproducing, the Druff population exploded, causing environmental damage, famines, and the exstinction of several edible species. Unusually, no resource wars or conflicts followed, due to the timid and gentle nature of most Druffs, who preferred to starve than take food from other Druffs.

The story of their plight reached the ears of Thanos, who believed Ryas to be a perfect candidate for 'balancing'. He therefore sent armies to Ryas to kill 50% of sapient life. However, Ryas had also been targetted by the Klyntar, who intended to colonise the planet.

A bloody war between the Klyntar and Thanos's Armies followed. The war was ultimately won by Thanos, who went on to commit the only genocide in the history of the planet. Notably, since this did nothing to address the root cause of the problem, the Druff population returned to pre-genocide levels within 5 years.

The population only stabilised when the Skrull colony on Tarnax II, hearing the sad story of the species, chose to send a message to the planet to tell them that Sl'gur't and Kly'bn would allow Blessed-of-Litters to return to Ryas, a move that was widely praised throughout the galaxy, but condemned by the fundamentalist Dard'van sect of the Skrull religion. They were so insensed by this, Carol Danvers had to intercept an agent sent by the Dard'van to tell the Druffs their god was once again enslaved.

Author's Note
Ryas and the Druffs are 616 canon, although they have no connection to Thanos: it's Galactus who devestates them in the comics. But they have a canonical overpopulation problem, and they basically exist as a kind of running joke in the canon, where they're the cutest most harmless species imaginable, but literally nothing nice has ever happened to them, so getting targetted by MCU Thanos seemed entirely in character!
