San Francisco
San Francisco is the 16th most populous city in the United States and the fourth most populous in California.
It was founded in 1776 by Spanish colonists, who established the Mission San Francisco de Asís. The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought rapid growth, making it the largest city on the West Coast at the time. After three-quarters of the city was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt. It became the birthplace of the United Nations in 1945. The rise of the "beatnik" and "hippie" counter-cultures, the Sexual Revolution, and the Peace Movement led to San Francisco being a centre for the Summer of Love and the gay rights movement.
A popular tourist destination, San Francisco is known for landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and its Chinatown. San Francisco is also the headquarters of companies such as Twitter, Airbnb, Pym Technologies, and Uber.
