Peter Parker's fight with Adrian Toomes caused a Chitauri energy weapon to malfuction, and though Peter tried to contain it using webbing, the subseqent explosion cut the ferry in half.
Peter did his best to hold the two halves of the ferry together by hand, but his webs began to snap under the strain, allowing water to rush in. The ship was saved by the intervention of Vision and James Rhodes, who responded to the distress call.
